Christine Fairchild, a senior chemistry major at Cedarville University in Ohio, received The Creation Research Award in Chemistry during the recent Honors Day program. This award is given to an outstanding senior chemistry major. Miss Fairchild is the daughter of Stephen and Sarah Fairchild of Goldsboro.
Vanessa Ponce, a rising senior at Spring Creek High School, was named a Junior Scholar at Elon University. To achieve this distinction, Miss Ponce had to have an A-average, score at least 1200 on the PSAT or SAT, and rank in the top 15 percent of her class. She is the daughter of Vincente and Juana Ponce of Seven Springs.
Antonio Worrells, a student at Goldsboro High School, has been named a national award winner in mathematics by the United States Achievement Academy. He was nominated for the award by Angel Batts, a teacher at the school. Worrells will be included in the United States Achievement Academy's Official Yearbook, which is publish nationally. He is the son of Albert and Camelia Worrells of Goldsboro and the grandson of Annie Davis of Mount Olive and the late Frankie Davis, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Worrells Sr. of Goldsboro.
Brittany Carr, daughter of John Henry and Shing Carr of Mount Olive, has been accepted to the 2005 Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) of Summer Studies. This summer will mark the second year Miss Carr has attended TIP.
During the tree-week term, TIP participants enroll in a single course and generally complete the equivalent of a year of high school or a semester of college-level work. This summer, Miss Carr will complete the Introduction to Medical Science course.
Students invited to participate in Duke's TIP summer program are chosen based on SAT or ACT test scores.
North Carolina Wesleyan College's Traditional Day Program has awarded a four-year academic scholarship to James Jones of Pikeville. Selection was based on his high overall academic standing for the fall semester of this year.
Nicole Aycock, daughter of Nora and Gary Aycock of Pikeville, served a week as page in the North Carolina Senate. She is a sophomore at Charles B. Aycock High School where she is in the Octagon and FCCIA clubs. Her sponsor was Senator John H. Kerr III.
Shelly Lancaster, daughter of Linda and Richard Lancaster of Stantonsburg, served a week as page in the North Carolina Senate. She is a sophomore at Charles B. Aycock High School where she is involved in sports and Health Occupations Students of America. Her sponsor was Senator John H. Kerr III.
Kelli Gurley, a student at Rosewood High School, recently served for a week as a page in the North Carolina Senate. She is the daughter of Dana and Archie Gurley of Goldsboro. Her sponsor was Senator Fred Smith.
