Fremont health fair to be held Saturday

FREMONT -- An educational health fair returns to Fremont on Saturday, offering information on such topics as diabetes, heart health, and nutrition.
The free event, sponsored by Fremont Area Health Clinic, will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Martin L. King Mini Park on Balance Road. It is being sponsored by the Rural Health Coalition of Duke University School of Medicine and the undergraduate Rural Health Clinics for Humanity.
The Duke contingent had traditionally organized an annual health fair in Fremont, but the event had lapsed in recent years. Last fall, community members pushed for its return.
Since the late 1980s, students and faculty from Duke have volunteered their time for the monthly People's Clinic in Fremont. Free medical care is provided to residents from Wayne County and the surrounding areas who are unable to afford health care.
At Saturday's fair, there will be speakers from the Wayne County Health Department, Duke University Health System, and other local and state agencies. Information booths will spotlight such topics as prostate cancer awareness, STD prevention, youth fitness and healthy eating, vision, cholesterol and glucose screenings, and women's health.
To participate in some of the screenings, organizers advise fasting beforehand for best results. That means having nothing to eat after midnight tonight and nothing to drink except water, and no coffee to drink on Saturday morning prior to the test. Medications can be taken as usual, except diabetes or insulin, which can be taken after the test is finished
