Severe weather threat
A risk of severe weather, with the chance of isolated tornadoes, exists for Wayne and surrounding counties beginning late this afternoon and continuing through late Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service in Raleigh says shifting winds and abundant moisture, combined with a stalled low, brings a chance of damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and large hail between 2 and 11 p.m. today. The threat will continue through Saturday as a cold front approaches from the west.
The southern and eastern counties, including Wayne, are in the main area of concern.
People across Central North Carolina are being urged to note changing weather conditions and monitor weather forecasts for any watches or warning.
Annual walk Sunday
United Church Ministries' 22nd annual Walk for Hunger will take place on Sunday. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. at the gazebo at Herman Park, and walkers will leave the park at 1:30.
Two rest sites will be included along the route, and everyone who crosses the finish line will get a T-shirt.
United Church Ministries provides food and financial help to an average of 2,300 people each year. The assistance is for emergency situations, not long-term needs.
The agency is funded through contributions from churches, civic organizations and proceeds from the annual walk.
To sign up, contact a local church walk representative or call the UCM office, 734-0480, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and leave a message for the walk chairman.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive Sunday from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
