County clean up events being planned by Keep Wayne County Beautiful

Get ready for your spring cleaning, Wayne County.
Keep Wayne County Beautiful is planning several events during the Great American Cleanup, which is held March through May each year by the national Keep America Beautiful organization.
The local group talked about its plans at its meeting Tuesday.
An electronics recycling day will be held Saturday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the parking lot of Sam's Club.
People will be able to drop off old computers, TVs, VCRs, camcorders, telephone systems, printers, copiers, fax machines, cell phones and other electronic equipment. Appliances will not be accepted. The equipment will be stripped and recycled as much as possible.
This will be the fifth electronics recycling event held locally. The previous four have collected more than 63 tons, which would have cost more than $23,000 to landfill, said Simonne Cato, director of Keep Wayne County Beautiful.
The county's Litter Sweep will be held Saturday, April 30. Volunteers will meet at the Wayne County Courthouse at 8 a.m. and then go out to clean several targeted roadsides around the county. Transportation will be provided, as will safety vests, bags, pick-up sticks and latex gloves.
They will meet back at the courthouse for lunch, a closing ceremony and door prizes.
Corporations and businesses, county and city officials, civic groups, churches, youth groups and individuals are being asked to register now. They can do so online by going to www.waynegov.com and clicking on "news."
Ms. Cato will present Earth Day programs at Carver Heights Elementary and Eastern Wayne Middle schools.
Keep Wayne County Beautiful can assist groups that want to do projects during the Great American Cleanup. For example, a Boy Scout troop painted playground equipment at Herman Park a few years ago. Call KWCB at 731-1600.
More than 2.3 million people volunteered during the Great American Cleanup in 2004, according to Keep America Beautiful. That makes it the nation's largest community improvement program.
