More charges
James Lenair Albrittain, who has been charged with robbing four women in Goldsboro and another in Fremont, now faces more charges filed by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
An 80-year-old woman in Rosewood reported that a black man entered her home at about 11:15 a.m. Feb. 16 and said he was looking for another address. The man demanded the woman's purse and robbed her of $22. He fled in a blue, mid-sized car.
Albrittain
Albrittain was arrested Tuesday. His secured bond was set at $50,000.
Albrittain allegedly has targeted elderly women by following them home and robbing them. Five of the six victims were in their 80s.
"The fear and terror this individual has placed on our elderly citizens is unbelievable," said Sheriff Carey Winders.
Albrittain now has been charged with three felony counts of armed robbery and common-law robbery, and one felony count of kidnapping, breaking and entering, larceny and breaking and entering of a vehicle. Albrittain remained in the Wayne County Jail on $196,400 in secured bonds.
Detective Sgts. Rick Farfour and Robert Chunn arrested Albrittain with help from Cpl. Craig Edwins, Goldsboro Police Investigator Mike Horstmann and State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent John Rea.
Foggy wrecks
Four traffic collisions -- two at U.S. 70 and N.C. 111 and two on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway South, the U.S. 117 bypass -- occurred Tuesday during heavy morning fog, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Damages were estimated at $15,000 in a three-vehicle crash at 7:44 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 70 East, west of N.C. 111. One driver, Sonya C. Olmsted, 33, of Ruby Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other drivers were identified as Lue Parks Best of Arrington Bridge Road, Seven Springs, and Mark Stephen Douglas Jr., of Kinston.
About a minute later, a driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at U.S. 70 and N.C. 111. Paul Mitchell Oakley, 23, of Ayden was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Oakley also was charged with a stoplight violation.
The report said Oakley was driving a westbound van that collided with a southbound tractor-trailer that was operated by George William Smith Jr., of Pineview Cemetery Road, Mount Olive, for Case Farms. Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the van that Oakley was driving for Cintas Corp. of Greenville and at $500 to the tractor-trailer.
Three vehicles collided at 7:07 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway. William Henry Quinn, 53, of Garner Chapel Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $850.
At the same time, damages were estimated at $8,000 in a three-vehicle crash at Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and West Elm Street. Jay Andrew Sasser, 43, of Hood Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Trucks collide
Three trucks collided Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 117 North, south of Belfast Road. The busy, two-lane highway was blocked for several hours because of the wreckage and spilled diesel fuel.
One driver was injured and taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Traffic was detoured on Fedelon Trail and Salem Church and Belfast roads. Belfast, Patetown and Goldsboro firefighters assisted at the scene. A full report had not been released by the Highway Patrol.
Driver critical
A driver was listed Tuesday in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville after he was involved in a three-truck collision at N.C. 581 and Memorial Church Road. Gary Len Newell, 47, of Pinkney Road, Fremont, was injured Feb. 15. His northbound pickup was struck at 6:31 a.m. by a westbound pickup that did not stop, the Highway Patrol report said. Charges are pending, troopers said. The other drivers were listed as Douglas Gary Baker, 31, of East Parks Road and Meliton Figueroa Utrera, 30, of Wilson.
Eight hurt
Eight people from Pink Hill were injured Sunday night in a hit-and-run collision with a van at N.C. 111 and Bill Lane Boulevard, the Highway Patrol said.
One driver, Annita Childs, 30, and her passengers -- Marcus Childs, 10, Belinda Kenion, 33, Jaquanna McClain, 13 months, John McClain, 2, Jaquoia McClain, 4, Kwamesha Franklin, 6, and LaQuinta Franklin, 4 -- were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Damages were put at $5,000. The van allegedly involved was found later at Case Farms, but the driver had fled. It was registered to Victor Y Lopez Lopez of Ashley Dupree Lane, Seven Springs.
Bicyclist shot
A man riding his bike was shot Tuesday night on Parker Road near Kelly Springs Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Christopher Lee McConnell, 39, of Mount Olive told deputies that at about 8:15 p.m. a vehicle pulled sideways across the road and someone starting shooting. He said heard about nine shots. One hit his forearm, and the others struck his bike. He could not identify the assailant.
McConnell did not require hospital treatment, a Wayne Memorial spokesman said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A woman stopped at a gas station at 901 W. Grantham St. on Tuesday, left her car running, went inside, returned within a minute and found her car gone, Goldsboro police said. Sherry Dawn Vann of Goldsboro said her 2000 Nissan Maxima was worth $18,000.
*A picture of the Lord's Supper and a hood for a 1972 Ford F-150 were stolen from a home in the 300 block of Stanley Chapel Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. Jonah Ray Strickland put a $120 value on the property and set damage at $100. He also reported the theft of a 1983 Nissan.
*An air conditioner and steps for a mobile home were stolen between from the 200 block of Barwick Road, deputies said. The property, owned by Caldwell Banker, was valued at $1,700.
