James Sprunt gets nurses program grant

KENANSVILLE -- James Sprunt Community College has received a $151,806 grant for its new evening and weekend Associate Degree Nursing Transition program from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Winston-Salem.
The program, which began last fall, is targeted to licensed practical nurses who want to become registered nurses.
There is a desperate shortage of nurses in the health care industry, says June Davis, dean of Curriculum Services at JSCC.
"We wanted not only to address this problem, but also to give LPNs the opportunity to advance their careers while still working," she said. "This grant is a great help in that effort."
The grant will be paid over two years.
Courses in the evening and weekend program will include content related to the nurse's role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as a member of the discipline of nursing and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
Registration for the Summer Semester will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 23 in the McGowen Building room 172. Applications must be received by May 10.

The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust was created in 1947 by the will of Mrs. William N. Reynolds of Winston-Salem. Three-fourths of the Trust's grants are designated for use for health-related programs and services.
