Toddler identified
The 2-year-old boy killed last weekend by a single gunshot wound was identified Thursday by Goldsboro police as Antwoine Mayo Jr. of Andrews Avenue.
The circumstances surrounding the death, which occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, are still being investigated, police Sgt. David Kelly said today.
Another juvenile was present in the room where the shooting occurred, Kelly said. No charges have been filed.
The toddler was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He died Sunday night.
The toddler's body was sent to a state medical examiner's office in Greenville for an autopsy, police said.
Robbery
A fourth person was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with the armed robbery of three people in the 300 block of Brownrigg Street.
Tonenetta McKnabb, 20, of Creech Street was accused of taking part in the Nov. 2 holdup, Investigator Dale Foster said. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
The three young men were visiting the other people in the home, and as they left, they were approached by five people with weapons, police said. The suspects robbed the victims of their cash and other property before returning inside, Foster said.
Joslyn Moore, 18, and Jamal Clerfont, 20, both of Brownrigg Street, were arrested Nov. 2, and Dwayne Hardy, 20, of Goldsboro was arrested Nov. 16.
The fifth person, Ivan Lee Harvey, 20, of Birddog Lane, Dudley, also is being sought on three counts of armed robbery.
Drug arrests
Two more people wanted in a two-month undercover drug roundup were arrested Thursday by Wayne County authorities. Seventeen people have been arrested and eight more are being sought.
William Glenn Knight Jr., 23, of South Virginia Street was charged by sheriff's deputies with selling cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Joseph Lamont Battle, 19, of Olivia Lane was charged by Goldsboro police with selling cocaine. He also was jailed in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Office fire
A heater malfunction was blamed Thursday night for a fire that damaged an office at S&M Wheel Coach at 4044 U.S. 70 West, officials said.
The amount of damage to the building was estimated at $3,000, Oakland Fire Chief Jack Howell said today. The building was valued at $20,000.
Eighteen Oakland volunteer firefighters answered the 11:50 p.m. call with four trucks. When they arrived, the saw heavy smoke in the attic but no flames, Howell said. The owner had tried to put out the fire with garden hoses. Firefighters put a tarp in the attic, Howell said, preventing any fire from damaging the contents.
The fire was controlled in about 25 minutes, but firefighters needed about another hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. About 15 Rosewood volunteers assisted with four trucks.
Traffic accidents
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 at 4:48 p.m. Thursday at South Madison Avenue and East Pine Street, Goldsboro police said. Jarid Bailey, 23, of Porter Street, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was riding with Tashombi Azeckry Bailey, 30, of Bunche Drive. Sharon C. Grieve, 33, of Scriven Road, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
*Damages were estimated at $11,000 at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at North William Street and Hooks River Road, police said. Nicholas A. Northam, 21, of West Lockhaven Drive, was charged with a yield violation. The report said Northam was making a left turn and his car collided with an oncoming, northbound sport utility vehicle driven by James Robert Musgrave Jr., 68, of Eleanor Avenue.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-truck collision at 1:36 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 13 near Central Heights Road, the Highway Patrol said. Cecil Lee Wilson, 28, of Biggs Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Pernell Best, 46, of Banks Avenue, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*Damages were estimated at $5,200 in a three-vehicle crash at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday on Indian Springs Road near Barwick Road, the Highway Patrol said. Rhonda F. Whitley, 33, of Barwick Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Louise P. Foss, 61, of Barwick Road, Mount Olive, was making a left turn. The impact of the collision sent Ms. Whitley's car into a parked truck, registered to Jerry Lynn Morris of Peter Grant Road, Snow Hill.
*Damages were estimated at $12,000 in a hit-and-run accident at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 117 near N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. Alanda Gail Hayes, 56, of Wilmington, had moved to the left lane but could not avoid an out-of-control car that spun into her vehicle, troopers said. The other driver fled. The reports said the car was registered to Dario Franco of Van Dyke Lane, Dudley.
*Damages were put at $6,500 at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday on Bertie Pierce Road near Old Kenly Road, the Highway Patrol said. Marion Lee Radford, 86, of Bertie Pierce Road, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation. Radford was leaving a driveway, the report said, and his car collided with an eastbound pickup truck, driven by Frederick Charles Goetze, 55, of N.C. 581 North, Pikeville.
*Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 at 1:55 a.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Arturo Leon Carmon, 25, of Winterville, and his passengers, Yolanda Harper, 20, of Kinston, Shawana Smith, 22, of Greenville and Jacob Ford III, 28, of Raleigh, and the other driver, Gerald Wayne Dixon Jr., 20, of Ayden, were released after emergency-room treatment. Dixon was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The westbound car that Dixon was operating collided with the southbound auto that Carmon was driving, the report said.
*Three people were injured and damages were set at $11,500 at 6:56 p.m. Monday at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Joseph Tyler Gardner, 20, of Ava Street, and the second driver, Edith S. McClenny, 76, of Park Drive, Pikeville, and her passenger, Yvonne Smith, 78, of Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. Mrs. McClenny was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
*Three people were injured and damages were put at $5,000 at 6:40 p.m. Monday at U.S. 13 and Woodland Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Donna Kay Hamilton, 50, of Pleasant Ridge Road, and the other motorist, Carlos Alfaro Galicia, 44, of Clinton, and his passenger, Maritza Arocho, 48, of Six Runs Lane, Faison, were released after emergency-room treatment. Galicia was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Troopers said the southbound car that Galicia was driving collided with the eastbound auto that Ms. Hamilton was operating.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A .25 caliber handgun, a digital camera and about $200 in change were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Powell Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, Carlton Ray Turner, estimated the value of the stolen property at $800.
*Jewelry, a jewelry box and wrapped Christmas presents were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 4200 block of N.C. 111 North, deputies said. The resident, V.L. Glisson, estimated the value of the stolen property at $830. The jewelry included six rings, four gold chains and three necklaces.
*A John Deere lawn mower with a 38-inch cut was stolen from a storage building in the 800 block of Country Club Road, deputies said. The resident, James Earl Herring, said the mower was worth $2,800.
*About 120 music compact discs and a black bag with paperwork were stolen Thursday from a car in the 400 block of Hooks River Road, Goldsboro police said. The owner and resident, Nekisha Williams, put a $1,435 value on the missing property.
*A green 1996 Jeep Cherokee was stolen from Toyota of Goldsboro at 301 N. Oak Forest Road, police said. The vehicle was valued at $4,000.
Missing
Two teen-agers were reported missing Thursday night to Goldsboro police.
*Jenifer Lucille Berry, 14, of 1401 Clingman St. was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 220 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When she was seen last at 9 p.m. Thursday, she was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, a red, yellow and green jacket and pink and white athletic shoes.
*Antonio Watson, 16, of 2513 E. Elm St. was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 140 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When he was seen last at 8:45 p.m., he was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, boots and a black and red coat.
