Sheriff: Inmate died
of heart problem
The death of a Wayne County Jail inmate was attributed to heart disease, officials said Thursday.
Terry O'Neil Teachey, 41, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, died Sunday.
Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said a preliminary autopsy report from the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill had revealed the inmate's ailment. Foul play was not suspected in the death, Raecher said.
A final autopsy report is not expected for six to nine weeks, the captain said.
Teachey has been jailed in lieu of a $22,000 secured bond since Sept. 20 to await a trial on felony charges of breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and possession of cocaine.
Teachey also was sentenced Oct. 4 to six to eight months in prison for a probation violation.
Raecher said Teachey had an existing medical condition for some time.
Gun charge
A 33-year-old man -- stopped for suspicion of driving while impaired before dawn today by a Wayne County sheriff's deputy -- was charged with possession of a shotgun that was reported stolen seven years.
Elpidio Aguilar of Broughton Lane, LaGrange, was accused of having a firearm that had been stolen July 25, 1997, from a home in the 1000 block of North Beston Road. The resident, John Wallace Compton II, had reported the theft of two shotguns, two rifles and jewelry.
Aguilar also registered .14 percent blood-alcohol content, the report said, and he also was charged with driving while impaired. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
Kitchen fire
An alert neighbor saw a mobile home on fire Thursday and then put out the fire with an extinguisher, officials said.
Arrington Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Rogers said Aaron Price, who lives at 235 Beaver Drive, had put a pot on the stove and then stepped out to his porch.
The pot was ignited, and the fire burned cabinets and the stove, causing an estimated $1,500 in damages. Firefighters took the stove outside and cleaned up the kitchen.
"He doesn't see well and his neighbors look out for him," Rogers said. "ƒ It could've been a lot worse."
When nine Arrington firefighters answered the 5:02 p.m. call with two trucks, the unidentified neighbor had put the fire out. Dudley volunteers assisted.
The neighbors also asked for help in the use of a fire extinguisher. Rogers said he gave them a class.
Vehicle theft
Two Johnston County men were charged Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with felony larceny and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Steven Brian Nipper, 19, of Smithfield and James Franklin Ashworth Jr., 21, of Four Oaks were accused of stealing a vehicle Aug. 31 from a resident on Memorial Church Road. The vehicle was recovered and returned to the owner.
A secured bond for the men was set at $50,000. They were arrested by Detective Sgts. Shawn Harris and Carl Lancaster.
Nipper and Ashworth also had been charged with common-law robbery in Johnston County. They were being held in jail in Smithfield.
Truck theft
A 42-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with the felony larceny of a tractor-trailer truck from Goldsboro Milling Co.
Ronald Lee Reid of Donaldson Drive was accused of stealing the big rig, valued at $150,000, on Oct. 3 and then striking a building. He jumped out of the cab and fled from the company parking lot. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $18,000 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Two people were injured at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 117 near Lake Drive. Lizbeth DeLeon, 17, of Old Grantham Road, and her passenger, Courtney Brewer, 17, of West James Street, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges have been filed. The driver had swerved to the left to avoid a collision, the report said, and the car ran across the median and off the left side and struck a ditch. Damage was set at $5,500.
*Damage was estimated at $8,000 at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Beston Road. The sport utility vehicle, driven by Elizabeth D. Ballard, 19, of New Bern, ran off the right side and overturned. No charges were filed.
*A car was demolished at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday on Emmaus Church Road near Indian Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. The car ran off the left side and overturned in a field. The driver then fled. The car was registered to Monico Perez Roblero of Hazlewood Drive, Dudley, and valued at $4,500, the report said.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $150 in change was stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Nor-Am Road. The resident, J.L. Kimley, estimated damage at $300.
*A white Honda four-wheeler was stolen from a barn in the 1300 block of Country Club Road. The owner and resident, Newlon M. Overman, said it was worth $1,500.
*Gunshots from a passing car damaged a van Thursday in the 3000 block of New Hope Road. The driver, Nathaniel Waters of LaGrange, estimated damage at $700.
He could not describe the assailants.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A gold bracelet, a white gold diamond ring and $700 were stolen after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Carriage Road. The resident, P.J. Herring, estimated the value of the jewelry at $1,600.
*A personal computer and software were stolen from the old Southco office at 701 Patetown Road. An official with the company, which has been moved to 701 S. John St., put a $4,687 value on the stolen property.
*A motorist left the key in her car Monday at the Piggly Wiggly store parking lot at 100 N. Lionel St. and returned Thursday to find that it had been stolen. Mary Beth McLamb of LaGrange said the silver, four-door 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix was worth $7,000. Her personal checks also were taken.
*Two speakers were stolen after a vehicle's top was cut in the 400 block of Todd Drive. The owner and resident, J. Pooler, put a $500 value on the speakers and set damage at $500.
