Mt. Olive awards sewer, airport work

MOUNT OLIVE -- The town board held a special meeting Thursday to award contracts for two construction jobs, one for sewer and the other for work at the municipal airport.
The board approved a $381,000 contract for sewer work that goes to Global Construction of Kinston.
The project calls for replacing an old sewer main with a 24-inch gravity-flow line between Bell Avenue and the town's sewer plant.
Town Manager Ray McDonald said the flow going to the wastewater treatment is lower now that the town has done the extensive work to repair or replace old pipes. He said he's been told the flow is down to a half million gallons; it used to be at 650,000 gallons at its lowest point.
Contracts for work at the Mount Olive Municipal Airport go to AIPAC Atlantic of Kinston for almost $152,000 and to Barnes and Power Construction Co. of Elm City for $48,000.
AIPAC will begin extending the runway to the south toward town.
Barnes and Powell will overhaul and repair the runway lighting system.
The two contracts come to about $200,000. The town can award only two at a time, because of funding, said McDonald. Other contracts will have to wait until grants come in. The town has about $357,000 in grants now, and he has been told another $109,000 will be approved soon.
"We don't have enough money right now to award all these bids," he told the board. Some of the bid proposals promise to keep the same rates through March.
The next runway work will be to extend it northward.
In other business, the town is hiring a new auditor. Jerry Britt resigned because of changes in law that make auditing for towns and counties much more stringent than it used to be.
McDonald recommending Denning, Rouse, Peterson and Sessoms of Clinton for $12,000.
The board agreed to accept Britt's resignation and hire the Clinton firm to do the town's audit.
