Military Appreciation Week Nov. 1-7
Goldsboro Mayor Al King and Wayne County Commissioner Chairman J.D. Evans have proclaimed the week of Nov. 1-7 as Military Appreciation Week in Wayne County.
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is the home to over 5,000 active-duty airmen, reservists, and their families and provides employment to over 1,000 civilian employees.
Several activities are planned for the week, including official governmental proclamations and a reception at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. Chamber members are encouraged to display their patriotism by flying the American flag and offering discounts at their businesses during the week for both active-duty and retired military customers.
The week will culminate with the Wings Over Wayne Airshow on Nov. 7 at Seymour Johnson. For more information, call the Airshow Information Hotline at 722-7427.
Downtown help
The state Transportation Department has selected Mount Olive to receive $260,000 to improve a section of downtown.
The Small Town Development Project applied for the money to make improvements in the 200 block of Center Street from the old theater north. The money will be used to improve sidewalks and widen the street.
The grant is dependent on the availability of federal money, and it also requires a $65,000 town match.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mays Chapel Church. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
Pate appointed
N.C. Rep. Louis Pate has been appointed to two commissions that will be meeting until the General Assembly reconvenes in 2005.
Richard Morgan, co-speaker of the N.C. House, named Pate, of Mount Olive, to legislative study commissions on state guardianship laws and on state personnel statutes.
"Louis is an able representative who has had an impressive two terms as a legislator," Morgan said of his fellow Republican. "He did an excellent job with his committee assignments last session, and I'm confident these commissions will prove to be a good fit for him."
