Airman's fatal crash
under investigation
KINSTON -- A traffic collision in which an airman from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base was killed remained under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
The victim, Curtis Faison, 35, was riding a motorcycle Saturday night on N.C. 11-55, near the Kinston Drag Strip, about two miles south of Kinston. A car pulled out in front of the airman who smashed into it and was killed instantly, reports said.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Kenneth W. Cooke said a reconstruction team will recreate the events leading up to the collision from the evidence at the site. The process will take about four weeks.
Cooke said the team's results will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office to determine if charges would be filed.
The driver, Faye Hudson, her husband, Durwood Hudson, and their young granddaughter were injured. Mrs. Hudson and the girl were treated and later released. But Hudson was transferred to Pitt County Memorial in Greenville, where he was listed in good condition, a spokeswoman said.
Trooper Jack Rogers, who investigated the wreck, said in his report that the motorcycle's speed may have been a factor in the crash.
Teen sentenced
in murder plot
A teen-ager from Dudley who had been accused of plotting to kill her parents has been sentenced to two months in prison.
Heather Nicole Johnson, 17, of Sandhill Drive pleaded guilty in Wayne County Superior Court to larceny of a firearm. The weapon has not been recovered. In exchange for the guilty plea, the state dismissed two counts of solicitation to commit murder. She was credited with serving 39 days in jail while awaiting her sentencing.
Ms. Johnson also was sentenced to an additional eight- to 10-month term. The sentence was suspended on condition that she completes 36 months of supervised probation and pays a $100 fine and court costs.
Two sheriff's detectives, Sgt. Tony Morris and Tom Flores, had received a report about a stolen firearm. Their investigation led them to Ms. Johnson. They said she had stolen the weapon and asked two friends to use it to kill her parents, Michael and Nancy Johnson.
Ms. Johnson was accused of asking two young men -- Edward Glyn Long, 23, and Bobby Dudley, 20, of both of U.S. 13 South -- in April to kill her parents. Long was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
While Ms. Johnson was in the Wayne County Jail awaiting her sentencing, her lawyer, James Copeland, said she continued to do her school work that teachers brought to her.
Jewelry theft
About $3,935 worth of jewelry and other property was stolen from a home in the 400 block of Bartlett Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report
The resident, Kelly R. Cox, also reported the theft of a video camera, a camera and two phones, valued at a combined $1,000. The jewelry included a Charles B. Aycock High School class ring, eight other rings, five bracelets and a necklace.
Law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $2,230 worth of tools were stolen from a construction site in Morgan Trace, sheriff's deputies said. The property, owned by Riggs Builders of Fremont, included four saws, an air compressor, a nailer, a router and a brad gun.
*A .380 pistol, jewelry, a DVD player, clothing and $20 were stolen from a home in the 300 block of Antioch Road, deputies said. The jewelry included six watches, three rings and two bracelets. The resident, Lavoris Gray Grantham, put a $2,305 value on his property.
*About $1,100 and a .25 caliber handgun were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Mill Dam Lane, deputies said. The resident, B.B. Ham, said the handgun was worth $60.
*Three gallons of white paint, a ceiling vent and two lights were stolen after a window was smashed at a home in the 200 block of West Pine Street, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Rod Pendleton of Goldsboro, said the stolen property was worth $72. Damage was set at $250.
House fires
Cooking mishaps were blamed by fire officials for two kitchen fires that damaged homes at 817 U.S. 13 South and 203 Cornfield Drive in southern Wayne County.
The homeowner on U.S. 13 South used a fire extinguisher Friday night to put out a fire that caused about $13,000 in damages.
"The fire was out when we got there, except for a few hot spots," Assistant Mar Mac Fire Chief Tommy Baker said. "He pretty much knocked it out with a fire extinguisher. It saved his house, believe it or not."
Mar Mac and Thoroughfare volunteers answered the 8 p.m. call and needed about an hour to put out the hot spots and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the one-floor brick home and $3,000 to contents. The home was valued at $150,000, and contents were valued at $50,000, Baker said.
The Cornfield Drive resident was more fortunate. Damage, mostly from smoke, was estimated at $1,500 to the double-wide mobile home.
Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rogers said the resident "got a pot off the stove, put it in the sink and caught the drapes on fire. It got into the cabinets a little bit."
Eight Arrington volunteers answered the 9:15 p.m. call Saturday with one truck. About 10 Dudley firefighters assisted with two units.
The names of the two homeowners were not immediately available.
Church break-in
Two young men were arrested Wednesday night by Goldsboro police after numerous doors had been damaged at St. Frances Episcopal Church at 503 Forest Hill Drive.
Police Officer Christopher Crawford responded to a call about suspicious people at the church and saw two people flee. Anthony R. Arnold, 17, of Blaire Lane and Daniel Dashiell Perkins, 23, of Lily Place were charged with attempted breaking and entering and resisting arrest. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Two hurt in wreck
Two people were injured and both vehicles were demolished in a wreck at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 18 on Pineview Cemetery Road near Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. Leticia Rodriguez Requena, 28, and one of her passengers, Edilla Morales, 26, both of Latino Park, Seven Springs, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Marco Soto, 39, of Ellijay, Ga., was charged with driving while impaired and a yield violation. The vehicles were valued at $6,000.
