State employees group to hold hearings

ROCKY MOUNT -- North Carolina public service workers plan to testify at public hearing on working conditions to gather evidence for a complaint with the International Labor Organization.
The hearing is the first in a series being planned across the state as a part of the International Worker Justice Campaign, sponsored by UE Local 150 to help build a movement to win collective bargaining rights for public sector workers.
Workers from the City of Rocky Mount, the Special Care Center of Wilson, and others will testify Thursday at Edgecombe Community College, 225 Tarboro St. in Rocky Mount. The hearing will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
The group says the hearing will focus attention on institutional patterns and practices of unfair treatment faced by public sector workers in North Carolina, and why current state law prohibiting contracts between public sector workers and their employers should be repealed.
The testimonies will be used as part of a complaint to be filed by a delegation of international lawyers with the International Labor Organization. The ILO is a U.N. agency that seeks the promotion of social justice and human and labor rights.
