Volunteer Wayne offers opportunities to serve Wayne County for all ages. This service is provided by Volunteer Wayne and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at Wayne Community College. NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AGES
MAKE A WISH -- Be part of a dream come true for a child with a life threatening medical condition. Wish granters and special event volunteers will enable the Make a Wish Foundation to create quality wish experiences from initial family contact through completion for local families. Training is provided.
FUN(D)RAISE Sometimes there is too much of a good thing. Help with the Dog Wash fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 until noon and you will be assisting this nonprofit raise funds and awareness for humanely inhibiting animal overpopulation. Volunteers need to be 16 years of age, unless accompanied by a parent.
CARING COMPANIONSHIP FOR THE ELDERLY -- Do you have a heart for the elderly? Caring hospice volunteers can help families and patients with terminal illness by providing companionship. Clerical assistance is also needed. Flexible hours.
TRANSPORT INMATES FOR HISTORICAL-VILLAGE PROJECTS -- Inmate labor from the Federal Prison at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is available to help this historical project accomplish many projects; however, transportation to and from the base for the inmates is the missing piece. Inmates from the minimal security facility will be carefully screened. Supervisory training will be provided. One individual or several can participate during the hours from 8-4, Monday through Friday.
PREPARE FOR DISASTER -- Several disaster courses are available to help you make your neighborhood and community safer in the event of a disaster. Introductory to specialized training is available with certification upon completion of each class. Free, however pre-registration is required.
FUND-RAISER HELPS YOUTH PROGRAMS -- Charity Superball Golf Tournament can use some extra hands on Thursday, Sept. 16. Four hole monitors are needed from 12-4 p.m. You will be paired with a club member to offer golfers the opportunity to purchase "shootout tickets." This event raises funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County, scholarships at Wayne Community College, and other youth programs. No golf experience is necessary.
TEACHERS NEED YOU -- A variety of positions are available in several schools in various grade levels. Some require special skills while others do not. Just some of the opportunities are: working directly with students, monitoring halls, grading papers, making copies, and filing. Special needs are preparing seventh grade students for the End of Year Writing Test and one on one attention with bilingual and special needs students. You can play an important role in improving education in Wayne County!
HELP THE HOMELESS -- Collect items for shelter to replenish their empty shelves. Some items to include: razor, shaving lotion/cream, bar soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, and washcloths.
ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES
FEED THE HUNGRY -- Soup kitchen can use assistance preparing and serving meals Monday through Saturday. Just a few hours of your time will go along way to help them in their mission to provide meals to the hungry in our community.
KEEP CHILDREN SAFE -- Home Alone Program is looking for volunteers to teach first aid, Internet safety, and child abduction prevention. The time commitment varies from as little as six hours (including training) to as much time as you wish with this worthwhile program. Retired teachers, law enforcement, emergency and medical personnel are ideally suited for this opportunity.
SHARE COMPUTER SKILLS -- This community computer lab can use you! Help others build computer skills in Microsoft programs, or learn to safely navigate the Internet. You can select your hours between Monday and Wednesday from 5-8:30, Tuesday 12-2, and Saturday 10- 2.
ENABLE PARENTS TO EARN THEIR GED -- Keep little ones entertained while their parents work toward their high school GED. You will be a key ingredient to their success. Hours available are Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 -12:30.
CRITICAL NEED FOR BLOOD -- Summer creates some real challenges for the Red Cross in maintaining an adequate blood supply for Wayne County. More travel increases the number of accidents, creating more of a need. Busy summer schedules decrease the number of donors. Dates available are Sept. 12, 17, 18, 20 and 24. Give the gift of life. You never know when you may need it!
