Jones sponsors bill

U.S. Rep. Walter Jones is co-sponsoring a bill to increase the military death gratuity benefit, a one-time payment to surviving family members of servicemen and women who die in battle.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Dennis Moore of Kansas, has 57 co-sponsors from both parties. Jones is a Republican whose district includes Wayne County.

The present death gratuity benefit is $12,000. The bill calls for raising it to $50,000. It would be applied retroactively to all servicemen and women who have died since Sept. 11, 2001.
