Historical association faces financial hardships

The Wayne County Historical Association could be facing some financial hardships over the next couple of years if it does not increase its fund-raising, members say.
The association has solicited $4,000 so far this fiscal year, but it needs a lot more to keep the Wayne County Museum running.
High utility bills and plans to rewire the museum are just two reasons it needs more funding. There is still some money coming from the Goldsboro City Council and the Wayne County commissioners, but it's not enough, board members say.
So the association will be sending out membership letters to those who may be interested in joining; researching grant possibilities; working on a video that members can take to groups in the area to tell them more about the association; and continuing to solicit money from the community.
The association has planned an annual meeting for members for Thursday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Billie's restaurant in Goldsboro. It is $27 per person, which includes dinner and a presentation by Betty McCain, former state secretary of cultural resources.
Checks should be made payable to the Wayne County Historical Association and either sent or brought to the Wayne County Museum at 116 N. William St. in Goldsboro. The checks need to include how many will be coming and the names of those planning to attend.
"We hope to see everybody there; we are looking forward to it," said Nancy Delia, association president.
The association is also planning a cleanup day for Aug. 21 at 9 a.m. Members are encouraged to come to the museum and help organize and store items.
Catherine Belmonte, museum manager, gave a report on upcoming events at the museum. She is planning a Christmas event in November. There may also be another book signing soon. There were 106 visitors to the museum last month.
There are plans for a special meeting one weekend in the next couple of months to discuss fund-raising and ideas for projects.
The museum's hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. For more information, call 734-5023.
