Community Building events find temporary homes

Goldsboro young people can thank the YMCA for being able to swim this summer.
The fire that destroyed the Wayne County Memorial Community Building in May left a gap in swimming programs offered at the center, until the Family Y stepped up to the plate.
Neil Bartlett, the city's recreation and parks director, said that the YMCA "graciously made time in their indoor pool for us to hold lessons and have the 'swimnastics' classes."
Bartlett added that the Y was not charging for the use of the pool.
The summer gymnasium and game-room programs were canceled, but the day camp scheduled for the center was moved to the Herman Park Center.
Bartlett said he was discussing the scheduling of some additional programs at the Family Y in the fall.
The community building was opened in 1925 and dedicated to World War I veterans. Trustees of the building are planning to meet next week to discuss what, if anything, can be salvaged from the existing structure and the location of a new building.
