Museum events planned
The Wayne County Museum has several educational and fun events coming up this month.
Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be "I Scream for Ice Cream," where participants will learn how ice cream was made in the old days and how it is made today. They will also get to sample some ice cream.
July 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be "Let's set up a lemonade stand," where participants will learn how to make lemonade the old fashioned way and enjoy a cold glass of lemonade.
July 28 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be "Christmas in July," where participants will make old-fashioned crafts for Christmas.
For reservations, call 734-5023. There will be an activity fee of $1 per child to cover the supply cost. The museum is at 116 N. William St. in Goldsboro.
In-state tuition
for military
The N.C. Senate voted Thursday to approve a proposal for in-state tuition for military personnel and their families.
"Our men and women in uniform have an incredibly tough and important job, and we should do all we can to support our military personnel," said Sen. John Kerr, who co-sponsored the bill.
"Making it more affordable for military personnel and their families to attend our community colleges and universities is a small token of our appreciation for the sacrifices they make."
Under Kerr's proposal, military personnel and their dependent relatives living in North Carolina would qualify for in-state tuition and fees. If the military member is reassigned outside of the state, the relative would continue to be eligible for in-state tuition as long as he is continuously enrolled in a degree program.
Butterfield endorsed
The National Education Association has endorsed G.K. Butterfield in his race for the 1st Congressional District.
Butterfield, a Democrat and former N.C. Supreme Court justice, was selected for "his enduring commitment to public education," according to a release this week by the N.C. Association of Educators, the NEA's state affiliate.
"He will work hard for the people of the 1st District, and his vision and experience will lead to a stronger public education system in our community and our state," the association said.
Butterfield, of Wilson, is the Democratic Party's nominee to serve the remainder of Frank Ballance's term. He is also among several candidates seeking to hold the seat from 2005 to 2007.
Center Stage auditions
Center Stage Theater will hold auditions for the musical "Guys & Dolls" Monday through Thursday, July 19 through 22.
The auditions will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. in Herman Park Center, 901 E. Ash St. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring a photograph and prepared music.
Production dates are Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 16 through 19. Information: director John Stutts, 735-0976.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mt.Carmel United Methodist Church. Donors will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt.
