Library board to resume planning for Jamboree and Stewfast

ALBERTSON -- The board of the Albertson Community Library Corporation will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Building to finish planning its upcoming Jamboree.
The Jamboree and Stewfest will be held June 26 on the grounds of the future Northeast Duplin Communities Library, which will be housed in the Peary Davis home at the intersection of N.C. Highways 903 and 111 in Albertson. The goal is to raise $160,000 for the building, renovations and books.
Board member Janice Grady says 12 teams have signed up to cook. There is no entry fee, and the deadline for the four-member teams to register is June 18. Those interested can call 252-568-1292 or 252-568-3659.
Most of the teams are from businesses, but one is a motorcycle club. "A lot of these men get serious about their cooking," she said.
The committee planning the event is encouraging the teams to bring tents; it will be hot that day, said Ms. Grady.
Cooking can begin at 8 a.m. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m., and the cookers must be on site by 9 a.m.
The committee has five judges for the Stewfest, and awards will be given based on cleanliness, product quality and showmanship. Judging will take place between 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Lunch at noon will include the stews, tacos and hot dogs. A $1 ticket buys a sample of each stew.
A horse shoe tournament has been added to the plans. Women at the Mormon Church are making a quilt to auction at 2 p.m. A Chevrolet Suburban will be given away. There will also be a bake sale on the grounds.
The Jamboree will continue until 3 p.m. that day on the grounds of the new library.
