Two small fires
An insect bomb and a commercial vacuum were blamed for two small fires in Goldsboro, fire officials said today.
A resident at 442 W. Seymour Drive put an insect bomb in a kitchen cabinet, and the bomb exploded Thursday night, causing a fire.
Damage was estimated at $300 at the Hilda Brown home. The cabinets were valued at $1,000. Nothing else was damaged, acting Fire Lt. David Grice said.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 10:55 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about 30 minutes to put out the fire and finish salvage work.
A vacuum pulling dust from machines created sparks today and started a fire at Anchor Coupling Co. at 106 Industry Court, said Lt. Carlton Parks. Employees cleaned out the pipes to stop the fire.
Fourteen firefighters responded to the 1 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They remained almost two hours to make sure the fire was out.
Electrical short blamed
An electrical short in an outside fuse box was blamed for a fire that damaged a home at 3507 U.S. 13 South, fire officials said.
The owner, David McDonald, tried to put out the fire Tuesday with an extinguisher, but Assistant Grantham Fire Chief Richard Proctor said the fire got into a wall and the attic.
Damage was estimated at $5,000. The one-floor, wood-frame home was valued at $75,000. Contents, valued at $30,000, were not damaged.
Fifteen Grantham volunteer firefighters answered the 6:32 p.m. call with five trucks. Jordans Chapel volunteers assisted.
School break-in
More than $2,819 worth of equipment was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday during a break-in and vandalism at Eastern Wayne High School, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
Computer equipment, a video projector, a television and a combination DVD and video cassette recorder were stolen, deputies said. No sign of forced entry was reported. The amount of damage also was not available.
Drug charges
A man being arrested on three felony drug charges Thursday night was charged with two more drug offenses after being searched by Goldsboro police.
Cephus Robert Faison, 41, of North Daisy Street was charged in February by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad with possession with intent to sell cocaine, possession with intent to sell marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs.
When police arrested Faison, they also charged him with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Faison was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $100,000.
Another Goldsboro man, Trasond Javoy Gerald, 18, of Seymour Drive, was arrested before dawn today by police and charged with three felony drug offenses.
Gerald was charged with possession with intent to sell cocaine, possession with intent to sell marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs. He was jailed in lieu of a $12,000 secured bond.
Break-in
Four teen-agers from Dudley have been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with breaking into a house and stealing property.
Kamiyla Faatima Lofton, 16, of Brentwood Drive and Willie Durrell Washington, 17, of Old Mount Olive Road were charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
Ms. Lofton was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond. Washington was jailed in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
Two 15-year-old girls also were charged in juvenile petitions with similar offenses. They were not identified by authorities because of their age.
The four Southern Wayne High School students were accused of breaking into a home on Sandhill Drive and stealing about $6,000 worth of property, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden. Some property has been recovered. Detective Mike Reid assisted.
Tire theft
A Dudley man wanted by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in the theft of tires and rims was arrested Thursday and charged with two felony offenses.
Mack M. Carter, 45, of Holloman Lane was charged with larceny and possession of stolen property. He also was picked up on an outstanding arrest order for failure to pay child support and charged with resisting arrest.
Carter was accused of stealing the property April 13. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. The tires and rims have been recovered. The sheriff's warrant squad assisted in the arrest.
Forgery
A 53-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with one felony count of forgery and uttering.
Anthony Herbin of Rollingwood Drive was accused of writing and cashing a check on a deceased relative's account at a check cashing store on Ash Street, Investigator Dwayne Dean said. Herbin was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond. Sgt. Mike West and Investigator Paige Learnard assisted in the case.
False report
A 34-year-old Goldsboro man who said his car had been stolen was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with filing a false police report.
Kenneth Wayne Sasser of Taylor Street was accused of saying his car had been stolen May 21 from a convenience store on U.S. 70 West, Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris said. Sasser had said he had stopped to make a phone call and two men jumped in the car and drove away. The car was involved later in a hit-and-run collision in Goldsboro.
Sasser's secured bond was set at $500 on the misdemeanor offense. Detective Sgt. Tony Morris and Sgt. Carter Hicks assisted in the case.
