Sen. Dole to visit base

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole will visit Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Wednesday and Thursday as part of her tour around the state's military installations.

Mrs. Dole is a member of the Armed Services Committee and was instrumental in procuring money for Seymour Johnson's new fire station on the flight line.

During her visit, she will have breakfast with enlisted airmen and their spouses, fly with the 334th Fighter Squadron in an F-15E Strike Eagle and receive briefings about current and future base construction projects and other on-going programs on base.

She will also attend a dinner at the officers' club, which will be hosted by Brig. Gen. Rick Rosborg, 4th Fighter Wing commander, and attended by local community leaders.

Voter drive set

A voter drive Tuesday is part of the Wayne County Board of Elections' continuing efforts to reach the most reluctant voters.

In North Carolina in 2000, the last presidential election year, only 34 percent of the registered voters aged 18 to 24 made it to the polls, compared to 66 percent of all other age groups, according to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement

But the center also says that young people are more likely to register and vote if asked to do so face-to-face.

The Elections Board, which recently held drives at county high schools, is targeting students at Wayne Community College on Tuesday. The drive will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Wayne Learning Center and the Pine Building.

Any U.S. citizen who will be 18 by Nov. 2 can register now and vote both in the July 20 primary and the general elections.

Anyone with questions about voting can call the Board of Elections at 731-1411.

Hart documentary

Wilmington producer Brenda Hughes could hardly contain her excitement when she received information in February that a national public television program distributor planned to distribute "Thank You, Eddie Hart."

The touching story about an obscure World War II soldier from LaGrange, N.C., and the Dutch woman who adopted his grave won the hearts of thousands of North Carolinians last November when the documentary premiered on UNC-TV.

On Memorial Day, May 31, UNC-TV will again commemorate American veterans as it re-broadcasts "Thank You, Eddie Hart" at 9 p.m. and joins many other public television stations that will air the program for the first time.

Released nationally on May 2 by American Public Television, the documentary will air on nearly 100 public television stations this year -- nearly 75 percent of public television stations in the country.

Bloodmobile

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a Bloodmobile on Monday from 1:30 to 6 p.m. at Mount Olive McDonalds. and from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at the Seven Springs Rescue Squad.

Power outage

Residents in the Seven Springs area may have experienced a power outage this morning from 5:30 to 9.

Tri-County Electric Membership Corp. planned to upgrade equipment at its Daisy Smith-Pricetown-Seven Springs Substation.
