Man wanted for crimes
A 40-year-old man with relatives in Wayne County is wanted by authorities in Berks County, Pa., after being tried and convicted in absentia of several aggravated sexual assaults and sentenced to 21 to 42 years in prison.
Miguel Angel Gonzalez Jr. had been released from custody on a $600,000 secured bond before he fled before his trial in Reading, Pa. He was described as Hispanic, 5-feet-8 and 148 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Gonzalez is wanted for rape, aggravated and indecent assault and corruption of minors. The victims were children, authorities said. He also was convicted twice of similar crimes.
Gonzalez was featured Saturday night on the "America's Most Wanted" television program. Information about his location was received immediately after the show.
Gonzalez has contacted relatives in Wayne County, but the relatives have denied knowledge of his location, Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said today.
Anyone with information on Gonzalez's location was asked to call Raecher at 731-1482, Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255 or Berks County Sheriff's Assistant Chief Philip A. Gipprich at 1-610-478-6391. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward.
Dog bites chief
Walnut Creek Police Chief Delisa Corbett was attacked Saturday by a dog as she answered a complaint about an animal in the 500 block of Mill Road.
Ms. Corbett was bitten several times on her legs. She was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
The chief told Wayne County sheriff's deputies that she approached a garage, the dog came out and she backed away. She said the animal rushed her and knocked her down, and she pushed the dog off her and shot it in the leg with her service weapon. The animal retreated to the garage.
Ms. Corbett then called for rescue and animal control. The animal was seized.
Chief's son charged
MOUNT OLIVE -- Michael Ballree, 18, of Mount Olive has been charged with larceny of firearms.
He is the son of the Mount Olive chief of police, Emmett Ballree, who has removed himself from involvement in the investigation and has requested a full investigation and review by the District Attorney's office.
Michael Ballree is charged with taking four handguns from a cabinet at the police station. He is free on $2,500 bond.
Chief has wreck
FREMOMT -- Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid Jr. was involved in a collision Wednesday with a car at Rose and Vail roads, the Highway Patrol said. The other driver, Daniel Wayne Hux, 21, of Vail Road, Pikeville, was charged with driving left of center.
Reid, 62, had stopped for the stop sign on Rose Road. Troopers said Hux was starting a left turn from Vail Road and his car collided the chief's patrol car. Damage was estimated at $4,000 to the 1999 Ford police car and $3,000 to Hux's 2002 Dodge.
Police car wreck
MOUNT OLIVE -- A Mount Olive police officer wrecked his patrol car on his way to answer a domestic disturbance call around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.
Mount Olive Police Officer David Johnson was unhurt when his cruiser collided with a sport utility vehicle at the corner of Oliver and Franklin streets. Johnson and the driver of the SUV, Vincent Bannerman of Franklin Street in Mount Olive, and his passenger, were treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The state Highway Patrol was called in to investigate because the collision involved a police car.
At press time today, no report had been filed by the investigating trooper.
Crime of the Week
An armed robbery and kidnapping on Saturday at a Hispanic convenience store in Goldsboro has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
A clerk told police that three Hispanic men entered El Hispano at 1004 S. George St. at 6:45 p.m., displayed handguns, tied up the clerk and locked the other victims in another room. The suspects then stole jewelry, leather coats, cash, a telephone and telephone calling cards. One suspect was described as wearing a black hat, black shirt and tan pants. Police said another robber wore a red shirt and the third wore all black. The men fled north on George Street in a white truck.
Anyone with information on this robbery and kidnapping or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Traffic accident
*A trailer turning from North Carolina Street to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, slid into a ditch at 7:40 a.m. Monday, blocking both eastbound lanes, Goldsboro police said. Billy Joe Zillner, 39, of Cottageville, S.C. -- the driver of the McElroy Truck Lines tractor-trailer from Cuba, Ala. -- was not charged. But damage to the stop sign and ditch was put at $500. Two local companies were called to assist in getting the trailer from the ditch.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with drug offenses in the 800 block of Durham Lake Road.
The resident, Roberto Monteze Powell, 26, was charged with three felony violations -- possession with intent to sell cocaine, possession with intent to sell marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping or selling drugs. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 secured bond.
Deon G. Moore, 26, of Garner Court, Mount Olive, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Assault
A 23-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Monday night by Goldsboro police on North George Street and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Bobby Harvey of Edgerton Street was accused of cutting Santonio Maurice Gregory, 34, of North John Street on Feb. 1 at a boarding house in the 1300 block of North George Street, police said. Gregory was treated for facial and head wounds and later released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Harvey was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
Five other men were arrested and charged with impeding the police investigation. Tony T. Tune, 24, and Luther Ray Jones Jr., 20, both of Mercer Street, and Marquis Antwan Blackman, 25, South Audubon Avenue were jailed in lieu of $2,000 secured bonds. Jonathan Lofton, 20, of West Grantham Street received a $2,500 bond. Deleak Curtis Lofton, 23, of West Grantham Street also was picked up on an outstanding warrant and was jailed in lieu of a $3,750 secured bond.
Car fire
A 16-year-old car was destroyed Monday in what authorities called a suspicious fire in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, a Goldsboro police report said. Firefighters answered the 5:54 p.m. call, put out the fire and referred it to police for a further investigation.
Police said the 1988 Oldsmobile was registered to Elizabeth T. Barnes of Evergreen Ave. and was valued at $1,500.
Missing
A 17-year-old boy was reported missing Monday by a relative to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Micheal Lee Deutsch of 2734 Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville, was described as white, 5-feet-7 and 150 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and glasses.
He was seen last at about 10 p.m. Monday. He may be in a green 1996 Pontiac Grand Am. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Corrections
*A small kitchen fire in an apartment at 1505 S. John St. on Thursday was caused by a stove malfunction, according to a report filed by the Goldsboro Fire Department. The News-Argus said Friday that the cause was unattended cooking.
*Greg Jones is the new Thoroughfare volunteer fire chief. A report in Monday's News-Argus wrongly identified Delbert Edwards as the chief.
