PRINCETON -- More than half of the affected property owners in Princeton have not complied with the town's ordinance to install a backflow prevention device.
Town Clerk Marla Ashworth told the town board Monday that only 25 of 64 property owners had complied. The remaining owners could be fined up to $1,000 a day.
The device is supposed to prevent contamination to the town's water lines.
Most homeowners are not affected by the ordinance unless they had a well or an irrigation system. But such businesses as beauty shops and funeral homes that use chemicals would need the device, said Princeton's contract sewer plant operator, John Boykin of Bailey.
A state law requiring the device went into effect in July.
Mrs. Ashworth also said eight grease traps are needed at town businesses.
Before the town board meeting, two employees from the Bojangles restaurant that is scheduled to open Monday morning served the board and visitors chicken biscuits and iced tea. The restaurant is at U.S. 70 and Pearl Street.
In other business, the board took these actions:
*Reappointed Beverly Withrow, Doris Freeman, Mickey Jernigan and Jean Haddock to four-year terms; appointed James Williams and Teresa Everman to four-year terms, and appointed Kay Arthur and Mildred Whitley to two-year terms on the Appearance Commission.
*Approved a public information meeting March 15 to begin the annexation of homes at 501 N. Pearl St. and 104 Azalea Drive and a vacant lot.
*Heard a routine monthly report from Police Chief Eddie Lewis.
