New deputies

KENANSVILLE -- Duplin County's deadbeat parents will have a new deputy coming to serve them papers.
Duplin County commissioners voted Monday to create a new position in the Sheriff's Office for the Social Services Department. The Sheriff's Office already provides a certified deputy to serve the papers when child support payments become delinquent. But Millie Brown, director of Social Services, said the deputies come to her as rookies, become good at what they do and move on to other positions. "We want one we can keep," she said.
The new position will be an assistant to the deputy already serving the papers, she said. Both positions will be paid for with federal money, she said.
It will cost the county $5,920 to cover the local share to pay the new deputy for the remaining five months of this fiscal year and to promote the one Ms. Brown already has. Next year's budget will reflect both salaries, one for $26,660 and the other for $28,857.
The new deputy isn't going to be an eight-hour shift person, she said. They have to catch people at nights and on weekends.
