Student transfer appeals

KENANSVILLE -- The Duplin schools have a new student transfer policy.
The school board approved the policy change Tuesday night during a regular meeting, and it will become effective at the beginning of the next school year.
Three spaces have to be open in a school before it can take takes in-county transfers via lottery. The students entering the lottery are assigned numbers to replace their names. They're notified by the end of June whether they're chosen.
If denied the transfer and they wish to appeal, they go before a Transfer Appeal Committee between March 15 and May 15. No more appeals will be made directly to the school board.
The committee meets the day of the school board meeting to receive the appeal and makes a decision to take before the board that night.
Students in grades nine through 12 under the new policy who want to transfer to another school for sports reasons would have to sit out from that sport for the first year. The following year, they could participate in the sport. The only exception to this ruling would be if the sport were not offered at the releasing school.
The new policy would take effect at the beginning of next school year.
