PIKEVILLE — Devon Marie Whichard and Christopher Allen Summerlin exchanged vows in a double-ring ceremony May 22 at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, with pastor Ira Williford and the Rev. David Hollowell officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Gary and Tina Whichard of Pikeville and the granddaughter of Goodman and Fanettie Whichard of Pikeville and Bill and Jean Wilkins of Smithfield.

She is an honor graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School and a summa cum laude graduate of North Carolina State University with a bachelor’s degree in business management. She is employed with BB&T in Durham.

The groom is the son of Wayne Summerlin and Judy Summerlin of Goldsboro and the grandson of Gladys Summerlin and the late Elvis Summerlin of Fremont and Ray and Dorothy Hollamon of Goldsboro.

He is an honor graduate of Eastern Wayne High School and a summa cum laude graduate of North Carolina State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He is employed with Progress Energy in Roxboro.

The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.

She wore an ivory satin A-line dress with beaded lace on the sweetheart bodice with draping cinched at the empire waist and lace appliqués on the chapel-length train.

Lauren Wooten was her friend’s maid of honor.

Jessica Summerlin, sister of the groom, was the bridesmaid.

Wayne Summerlin was his son’s best man.

Groomsmen were Joshua Wilson and Nicholas Farley, friends of the groom.

Betty Braswell directed the wedding. Presiding at the register and distributing programs was Kelsey Wilkins, cousin of the bride.

A program of wedding music was provided by Tony and Darlene Howell, and Ken Ingram, organist.

Following the ceremony, a pig picking reception was held in the church fellowship hall. Special helpers were Ginny Byrd and Gina and Nicole Adams.

After their wedding trip to Bryson City, the couple will reside in Roxboro.

Events held before the wedding included a bridal shower at Coker Memorial Church hosted by Gail Johnson, aunt of the groom; a dessert party and wedding shower at Sharon Baptist Church hosted by Jean Wilkins, grandmother of the bride; and a bridal shower at BB&T hosted by the bride’s coworkers.

A rehearsal dinner was held at Murphy’s Place.
