NEW BERN -- Charles B. Aycock proved persistence pays off Wednesday afternoon.
Grace Mooring was a perfect example.
The fourth-seeded Golden Falcon rebounded from an opening-set loss to defeat New Bern's Camryn Hutchens 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10) and help Aycock pick up a 6-3 victory in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play.
"The girls are starting to look better and playing smarter," Golden Falcons head coach Gene Stancil said. "I have told them they can beat players better than they are if they just out-smart them, and today they listen."
Karlyn Ray, Abbie Shackleford and Laney Reeves each claimed a straight-set singles win for CBA. Ray did not lose a game in the second set.
Ray-Reeves and Shackleford-Mooring each posted an 8-0 shutout at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, respectively.
C.B. Aycock travels to county rival Eastern Wayne today.
