DUDLEY -- Goldsboro started its 2018 season in come-from-behind fashion with a 16-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-9 victory over county rival Southern Wayne on Tuesday evening.
"It was a nail-biter tonight," GHS head coach TJ Lancaster said. "Southern Wayne came to play. [SW Coach] Jamie Williams has done a very good job over there. They are much improved. We just had a little more at the end."
Riley Howell collected 15 assists and served seven aces. The senior setter has now recorded double-digit assists in 39 consecutive matches.
Freshman middle hitter Hallie Brown and senior outside hitter Amber Pfennig logged four kills apiece for the Cougars.
Marcy Taylor supplied five aces, while Dakota Jones registered 17 digs on defense.
Senior Kya Hunter paced the Saints with nine kills and five digs. Senior Alexus Elliott, a multi-sport athlete, filed seven kills, four blocks and four aces.
The Saints (0-1 overall) play host to Spring Creek today. Goldsboro (1-0) returns home for a match against Rosewood on Thursday.
