Eastern Wayne and Goldsboro renewed their rivalry on soccer pitch Monday night.

The Warriors' Andrew Sherman and Bryan Morales dominated the Cougars in a 7-2, season-opening win.

"We did a great job of executing and finishing our opportunities," Eastern Wayne head coach Scott Summers said. "Our goal keeper made some great saves that kept us in the game."

Preston Barnes threw the ball into the box to Lance Steiner, who knocked it into the net to give Eastern Wayne a 1-0 lead in the 26th.

Goldsboro responded and tied the game at 1-1.

In the 28th minute, Colin Williams wove threw a couple of Warrior defenders and kicked the ball into the left corner of the net.

The game was never close from that point.

The Warriors won 50-50 balls and broke up most of the Cougars' scoring efforts. They attacked relentlessly, testing the limits of the Cougars' back line with an onslaught of shots.

Goldsboro could not match the pace.

Eastern Wayne took a 2-1 lead when Morales passed the ball into the box where Sherman buried the ball into the right corner of the net.

Morales increased the Warriors' lead to 3-1 in the 34th minute.

Sherman scored his second goal of the game when he sprinted down the middle of the field and pounded the ball into the net.

Eastern Wayne led 4-1 at halftime.

Goldsboro attempted to score early in the second half, but nothing worked.

In the 60th minute, Amjad Sarah kicked the ball after it bounced off the goalie's hands to make the score 5-1.

After a beautiful feed into the box, Morales kicked the ball through the goalie's hands for his second goal of the game in the 65th minute.

Sherman completed his hat trick (three goals) five minutes later when he cut through Goldsboro's defense and kicked the ball straight into the middle of the net.

"He's definitely someone to watch," Summers said. "He's just a freshman, but he's playing like a junior or senior. I've been coaching him since he was eight years old so I'm proud of him."

The Cougars scored their second goal of the game in the 75th when Noah Hancock converted penalty kick.

"I knew we had the potential to be a great team," Summers said. "We just had to put the pieces together."

Eastern Wayne plays host to Spring Creek today.
