Following a blowout win against Neuse Christian Academy, the Wayne Country Day boys' soccer team imposed its will upon Ridgecroft on Friday afternoon.

And after Rocky Mount Academy forfeited its game Saturday morning due to injuries, WCDS won the Charger Cup for the first time in school history. The Chargers were disappointed to not play their final game of the tournament, but they were ecstatic about winning it.

"Winning for the first time is huge especially given some of the players we've had on the squad in the past and then not make that final step to win it," Ellis said. "The boys really deserved it especially after that performance on Thursday evening."

Christian Garloch and Nehemiya Shaw each scored a goal in the Chargers' 2-1 win over Ridgecroft.

The first goal was scored in 15th minute. Marquise Neal had the ball on the right-hand side of the field and he passed the ball to Garloch who, slightly outside the box, kicked the ball into the side of the net.

Then in the 29th, Michael Greer split two defenders and passed the ball to Shaw who ran onto the ball and tucked it into the bottom corner of the net.

A 2-1 score indicates a close game, but the Chargers dominated and should have scored more goals.

"Friday was a little bit more of a battle but the boys worked through it," said Ellis, whose team outscored their opponents 7-1 in the Cup. "We weren't really troubled we gave up a freakish goal."

WCDS had ample opportunities to score but could not covert its chances. The Chargers either hit the crossbar, hit the post or hit the ball wide when they should've scored.

Now unbeaten and untied in three games, the Chargers travel to The O'Neal School -- the reigning Eastern Plains Independent Conference champ -- on Thursday. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

"They were 15-6 last year so that's going to be a test," Ellis said. "I hope that will give us a better idea of where we're at this season in 2-A."
