ELLERBE -- Caleb Gardner of Princeton Middle School claimed the Junior Division archery championship during the 2018 Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament contested recently.
Gardner scored 199 out of a possible 200 points.
Princeton placed second as a team in hunter skills -- a two-part test that includes a written portion and an orienteering course using a compass. The group was just 19 inches off of the mark for orienteering.
They placed third in the rifle and shotgun marksmanship team event.
Adam Peedin, a teacher at PMS, is the coach and receives assistance from several parent volunteers.
The YHEST is annual pre-collegiate tournament facilitated by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and its Hunter Education Program. Youth are allowed to showcase outdoor skills and demonstrate safety techniques that they learn in the program.
