Despite the dark clouds roaming the sky, Wayne County Post 11 Coach Adam Pate was not worried about the possibility of a weather delay and was happy to be out on the field Saturday evening.

"We're always ready to play, if the weather doesn't cooperate we will adjust then," Pate said. "We're just ready to go out and play. The weather hasn't been working well with us lately so we're just glad to be back out on the field."

Wayne County got off to a slow start, and Pate used the lightning delay to adjust as Wayne County overcame its early-inning mistakes to overpower Morehead Post 46, 13-4.

Before the lightning delay Wayne County was down 3-0 and struggling to get any offense going.

After the delay and with the rain still falling, Will Uzzell hit a three-RBI double that gave Wayne County a 4-3 lead.

"My big hit in the fourth felt great," Uzzell said. "We came out flat in the first couple of innings. We came back from the delay hyped up, and got the job done."

Wayne County never looked back.

During a seven-run fifth inning Chance Howard hit a grand slam home run.

Conner Vernon pitched three innings with two strikeouts before handing it off to the bullpen. Landon Ginn threw four strikeouts in two innings of work. Kolby Harris, with little time to prepare, got Wayne County out of tough spot with in the sixth. Johnathan Peacock threw a scoreless seventh.

"I threw a lot of strikes and they didn't hit hard," Vernon said. "I had good defense behind me, and we [as a team] couldn't have played any better."

"I threw four warm up pitches before Coach called me in. I just came out, tried to throw strikes and get the team out of the inning," Harris said.

Pate was pleased with the result of the game.

"After the lightning delay, we came back with a little more enthusiasm, but I thought the kids did a really good job of swinging the bats," he said. "We scored 13 runs, our pitching was really good. I thought we played really well tonight."
