C.B. Aycock claims weekend clash in Wilson

WILSON --  Senior reliever Jordan Gay picked up his third save of the season and tagged a two-run triple on Saturday as Charles B. Aycock turned back Hillsborough Orange at venerable Fleming Stadium.

The victory moved the Golden Falcons to 8-2 overall this season.

CBA's Nolan Harrell finished the afternoon 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Luke Frederick went 1 of 2 with a runner scored.

Carson Smitherman added a pair of base hits and an RBI, while Gay rounded out the onslaught with  a two-run triple in the sixth inning.

Starter Blake Gipson was solid over five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

He ceded control of the cliff to Gay in the sixth, who then tossed two frames of 1-hit baseball to officially close the proceedings.

CBA returns to the diamond on Tuesday, when it travels to Dudley for a rivalry matchup with Southern Wayne.

Eastern Wayne 1

PIKEVILLE -- Senior Luke Frederick sprinkled six hits over as many innings, Nolan Harrell went 1 for 2 with a home run and Charles B. Aycock turned back ECC 3A and county rival Eastern Wayne, 2-1, on Friday at Charles Davis Field.

The triumph moved the Golden Falcons to 7-2 overall, and 2-2 in matters of league significance.

CBA also got plate production from Blake Dilda, who finished 1 for 3 with a double, while Winston-Salem State commit Tyler Daniels went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Eastern Wayne (0-7, 0-3 ECC 3A), which opened matters with a run in its half of the first, got two base hits and an RBI from sophomore Will Uzzell.

Jason Mitchell, Josh Gross, Landon Ginn and Colby Miller also reached base for the Warriors.

Jordan Gay took over for Frederick after a 75-pitch stint, earning his second save of the season with a scoreless seventh.

Southern Wayne 3

DUDLEY -- A three-run sixth inning proved costly on Friday as Southern Wayne fell to ECC 3A outfit J.H. Rose.

The 5-3 setback moved the Saints to 4-3 overall, and 1-2 in league play.

Braxton Bradshaw paced matters for the hosts, going 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI. Lance Wise, Josh Grady and Matthew Kornegay also recorded base hits.

University of Mount Olive commit Jack Casbarro suffered the loss for Southern Wayne, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out five.

The Saints return to the diamond on Tuesday as the host of county rival Charles B. Aycock.

Spring Creek 10,

James Kenan 2

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jordan Ammons struck out 11 in six innings, Nathan Bell went 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBI and Spring Creek outclassed visiting James Kenan, 10-2, on Friday.

The Gators set the tone early, scoring eight runs in the opening three frames to give the speedy Ammons plenty of freedom on the cliff, to which he responded by allowing just two runs on three hits in 98 pitches.

Bell's offensive handiwork was complemented by Landon Smothers and Christian Yarbrough, who combined to produce four base hits and a pair of RBI.

Casey Whitfeld finished the afternoon 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Ammons contributed a base hit and two RBI to his own cause.

Spring Creek, now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in East Central 2A play, entertains league foe Clinton on Tuesday.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Goldsboro 2

CLINTON -- Junior Brody Morton went 3 for 3 with an RBI, but it wasn't enough to motivate Goldsboro past Clinton on Friday.

The East Central 2A setback moved the Cougars to 4-2 overall, and 1-1 in league play.

Josh Hartsfield, Cameron Roux and Lexton Lewis each supplied a base hit for GHS, which allowed runs in each frame save two.

The Cougars return to the diamond on Monday as the host of non-conference foe Eastern Wayne.

North Duplin 6,

Union 1

CALYPSO --  Ricky Cameron (1-0) struck out 15 over seven innings, Dylan Jones went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and North Duplin defeated Carolina 1A foe Union, 6-1, on Friday.

Marshall Pate provided two base hits for the hosts, as did a game Cameron, whose effort on the hill spanned 109 pitches.

Arthur Pigford also supplied an RBI for the Rebels (5-2 overall, 3-1 Carolina 1A), who return to the diamond on Tuesday at Princeton.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

South Johnston 10,

Rosewood 6

WILSON -- Rosewood sophomore Will Albert went 4 of 4 at the plate with two RBI during Friday's 10-6 setback to South Johnston at the Tobs Classic in Wilson.

The Eagles now stand 3-2 overall this season.

Albert's stellar play was complemented by Chance Howard and Tanner Capps, who tallied two base hits apiece.

Logan Price also performed ably for the Eagles, going 1 for 2 with a pair of RBI.

Kolby Harris absorbed the loss for Rosewood, allowing four runs on five hits in 41⁄3 innings.

Rosewood returns to the diamond on Monday, when it plays host to Carolina 1A foe Lakewood.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Bethel Christian 7

Jaxon Bauer (2-1) struck out seven over four innings, Cole Jacobs recorded a pair of RBI and Wayne Christian slipped past visiting Bethel Christian Academy, 9-7, on Friday.

The victory moved WC to 3-2 overall this season.

Bauer supported his own cause at the plate with a pair of doubles, as did Jaxon Anderson and junior Corbett Shaefer.

Wayne Christian returns to action on Tuesday, when it plays host to Christ Covenant.

New Life Christian 8,

Faith Christian 7

Sophomore Daniel Thompson went 2 of 4 with four RBI on Friday during Faith Christian's 8-7 setback to New Life Christian of Rocky Mount.

The loss moved the Conquerors to 4-3 overall this season.

Jackson Freeman and Jordan Hill each tallied two base hits for FCA, which led 7-3 before surrendering five runs in the top half of the seventh inning.

Cooper Voeller endured the loss for FCA, which returns to the diamond on Monday in Raleigh versus Friendship Christian.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

PIKEVILLE -- Shawna Williams struck out seven in five shutout innings and had two base hits as Charles B. Aycock turned back ECC 3A neighbor Eastern Wayne, 13-0, on Friday.

The mercy-rule victory moved CBA to 7-1 overall this season, and 4-0 in league play.

Abigail Lassiter continued her solid play of late, going 2 for 2 at the plate. Makayla Williams also added a pair of base hits.

Eastern Wayne remains winless this season.

DUDLEY -- Dawn Anderson struck out 10 and allowed just two hits, Wingate commit Rebecca Coor went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI and Southern Wayne shellacked ECC 3A neighbor J.H. Rose, 10-0, on Friday.

Kelly Dail complemented Coor's performance with a 2 for 3 effort at the plate.

Southern Wayne, now 4-4 overall and 2-1 in league play, hosts county rival Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

CLINTON -- A pair of runs in the top half of the eighth inning proved the difference as Clinton turned back Goldsboro, 4-2, on Friday.

GHS (2-5, 2-1 EC 2A) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Monday.

Bethel Christian 4 (5 Inn.)

Abigail Kornegay struck out five, allowed just one hit and went 3 for 3 with an inside-the-park home run and a double as Wayne Christian overwhelmed Bethel Christian, 19-4, on Friday.

Bri Verme went 2 for 3 at the plate, while Alyssa James tallied a single and a double on the afternoon.

Wayne Christian, now 2-3 overall, plays host to Oakwood on Tuesday.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Madison Sullivan, Leslie Reyes and Taylor Smith each found the net as Spring Creek blanked East Central 2A foe James Kenan, 3-0, on Friday.

The triumph moved the Lady Gators to 7-1 overall this season and 2-1 in league play.

Sullivan also brokered a goal, as did Jordan Lane and Mirna Santiago.

SC returns to the pitch on Monday, when it visits Deep Run for a showdown versus non-conference outfit South Lenoir.

PIKEVILLE -- Eastern Wayne and Charles B. Aycock played to a draw, 3-all, on Friday.

CBA now stands 2-4-3 overall this season, and 0-3-1 in ECC 3A matters. It plays host to Wilson Hunt on Monday.

Eastern Wayne (2-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 ECC 3A) travels to face county rival Goldsboro.

CLINTON -- McKayla Roberts notched a goal on Friday as Goldsboro fell to league rival Clinton.

The loss moved GHS to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in East Central 2A matters ahead of Monday's match versus Eastern Wayne.

Wayne Country Day 8,

Woodlawn 0

Langley Barnes scored four goals and brokered another as Wayne Country Day filed a lopsided triumph over Woodlawn on Friday.

The junior's nine-point effort was complemented by Hayden Nielsen, who tallied a hat trick (three goals) and Hermione Clough, who also found the net.

Katie Strickland (two assists) and Kathryn Hamilton (one assist) also performed ably for the Lady Chargers, who moved to 2-0-1 overall this season.

WCDS returns to the pitch on Tuesday, when it travels to Ahoskie for a match versus Ridgecroft.

Wayne Christian (0-1) fell to Christ Covenant, 5-1, on Friday. Holley Gurley scored the lone goal for the Lady Eagles, assisted by senior Kasey Norris.

WC plays host to CPIC rival Greenfield on Tuesday.

DUDLEY -- Justin Edwards scattered four hits over seven innings, Lance Wise went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI and Southern Wayne outstretched ECC 3A outfit New Bern, 5-1, on Thursday.

Kolby Anderson, Braxton Bradshaw and Josh Grady also contributed RBI for the Saints, who moved to 4-2 overall this season and 1-1 in league play.

Edwards was excellent in picking up his second win of the season, striking out four and walking just two en route to the complete-game victory.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Junior shortstop Landon Smothers went 3 of 4 on Thursday during Spring Creek's 8-4 setback to East Central 2A foe Wallace-Rose Hill.

SC (2-5, 0-3 EC 2A) also got RBI from Christian Yarbrough, Spencer Jameson, Nathan Bell and Kevin Grady.

Casey Whitfield provided a pair of base knocks.

Bell absorbed the loss for Spring Creek, allowing three runs on six hits in 4 2⁄3 innings.

North Duplin 5

CALYPSO -- Starter Jonathan Peacock allowed just one run in four innings, Chance Howard went 2 for 5 with two RBI and Rosewood ran away from Carolina 1A foe North Duplin, 10-5, on Thursday.

Peacock (1-0) also enjoyed a profitable afternoon at the plate, finishing with three base knocks and as many RBI.

Kolby Harris rounded out the Eagle offense, contributing two base hits and an RBI.

North Duplin (4-2, 2-1 C1A) got three base hits and an RBI from Colby Bass, while David Price finished 2 of 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

New Bern 3

NEW BERN -- Junior right-hander Mackenzie Bryan recorded 17 strikeouts on Thursday as visiting Southern Wayne dealt ECC 3A foe New Bern a 7-3 loss.

Rebecca Coor paced matters offensively with two base hits and a pair of RBI. Caroline Summerlin complemented the senior's effort with two base hits and a double, while Olivia Carr tallied two base hits.

Abbey Parker added a pair of RBI.

En route to the complete-game victory, Bryan scattered three hits and walked just a single batter.

Southern Wayne (3-4, 1-1 ECC 3A) cranked out 10 base hits on the afternoon.

North Duplin 16,

Rosewood 2

CALYPSO -- Senior Alyssa Santos allowed two runs on five hits in five innings, Callie Thornton went 4 for 4 with five RBI, and North Duplin overwhelmed visiting Rosewood, 16-2, on Thursday.

The Lady Rebels (6-0, 2-0 Carolina 1A) also got two base hits from Natalie Ramirez, while Rayanna Koch went 3 for 4 with a double.

Courtney Brock rounded out the North Duplin scorebook with a home run. The loss moved Rosewood to 2-4 overall this season, and 1-1 in league matters.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne fell in mercy-rule fashion to ECC 3A pillar J.H. Rose on Thursday, 9-0.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin (2-5-1 overall, 2-2 Carolina 1A) edged league rival Rosewood, 1-0, on Thursday.

The Lady Rebels trek to face Princeton on Tuesday, while Rosewood (1-4, 1-1 Carolina 1A) ventures to Midway.

Track & Field

CBA finishes third at South Central

WINTERVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock garnered a third-place finish on Thursday in an outdoor track and field meet hosted by ECC member South Central.

CBA's Alexis Reeves claimed first-place in the shot put with a distance of 23 feet, 101⁄2 inches. She also finished fourth in the discus throw with an effort of 59 feet, seven inches.

Denai Waters took third place in the 100m dash with a time of 14.13 seconds, while Dasani Jackson's time of 14.22 seconds was good enough to secure fourth place.

CBA's 4x800 relay team of Reeves, Alana Reeves, Dymond Floyd and Kaitlyn Romine finished in third place with a time of 13:18.60.

The 4x100 outfit of Jackson, Denai Watkins, Elicia Brown and Jacqueline Woods took second place with a time of 59.78 seconds.

CBA's 4x200 unit, consisting of Watkins, Elena Allen, Shi'tricia Speight and Jackson finished in second place (2:11.05), while the 4x400 team of Speight, Alana Reeves, Floyd and Alexis Reeves filed a second place finish (5:23.38).

Bri Verme connected on a fourth-inning grand slam as Wayne Christian routed Cape Fear Christian, 12-2, on Friday.

Verme also shined in the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out 11 batters. Leah Boswell added an inside-the-park home run, while Abigail Kornegay added a triple.

Brogden 4

Carson Gipson and Tyler Horton drove in three runs apiece on Thursday as Norwayne filed a 15-4 victory over Brogden.

Logan Lawhorn earned the victory for the Cobras, while Austin Booth had two base hits.
