Arlanda Faulker had 15 high-wire kills, senior libero Cassandra Lassiter provided 17 digs and Hannah Carter did just about everything else as Charles B. Aycock overcame a raucous crowd and an energetic, opening-set burst by Eastern Wayne to file a 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 straight sets victory on Tuesday at New Hope.
But the triumph didn't exactly qualify as easy.
Following a Jordan-era "lights out" ceremony to honor its senior class, Eastern Wayne jumped out to an early lead in the first stanza, playing into an Aycock middle that, at times, had difficulty communicating.
"In my opinion, you can't single-block our middle," Eastern Wayne head coach Anna Hajjar said post-match. "When we get a single blocker, it's a gift for us."
And one that kept giving until the trio of Faulkner, Lassiter and Carter found its stride.
With Carter on serve at 7-all in the opener, the Lady Blues went on an 8-0 run that set the tone for the remainder of the set, and led in short order to a 25-14 triumph.
In summary, the first stanza foreshadowed the match's remainder, with CBA finding trouble early in each set, only to be guided out of it by head coach Tangela Faulkner's tried-and-true triumverate.
"They were the glue," Faulkner noted.
And on this night, they had to be.
Aycock, now 9-7 overall and 4-6 in conference play, next sees action today at home versus Wilson Fike.
The loss dropped Eastern Wayne to 4-13 on the season, and 1-9 in matters of ECC significance.
The Lady Warriors travel to face Greene Central next week.
