WILMINGTON -- Ashley relinquished an early touchdown, then reeled off five consecutive touchdowns in a 38-6 victory over Southern Wayne on Friday evening.
It was the season opener for both teams.
The Saints' struck first on Tashaun Phillips' 53-yard touchdown pass to Xavious Speight with 6:19 left before halftime.
Ashley converted a short screen pass into a 75-yard score and grabbed a 7-6 lead -- one it would never reliquish -- at intermission.
The Screaming Eagles punched in four second-half touchdowns, including a "pick six" and punt return to the house. They added a fourth-quarter field goal to cap a 38-0 scoring outburst.
Tashaun Phillips completed five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Speight and Talen West provided 68 and 94 all-purpose yards, respectively.
Southern Wayne (0-1 overall) travels to James Kenan next Friday.
