PREP TRACK: Rosewood's Kostelecky earns pair of state 1A titles

GREENSBORO -- Rosewood has another outdoor track & field state champion -- Philip Kostelecky.

The sophomore emerged victorious in the men's wheelchair shot put and discus competitions during the 2017 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A championship meet held at N.C. A&T State University.

Kostelecky heaved the shot put 9 feet, 1.25 inches. His discus result was 11-3.

Teammate Montonio Wheeler finished state runner-up in the 400-meter dash -- a mere .03 seconds behind Mitchell County's Brody Smith. Wheeler also ran the anchor leg on the Eagles' 4x4 and 4x2 relays.

Princeton's Austin Sullivan placed second in the two-mile (3,200-meter run) with a school-record time of 9:54.43. Teammate Brent Hurst ended up state runner-up in the pole vault with a school-record jump of 13 feet.

Speedster Shamonda Bell placed fourth in both the 100 and 200 dashes.

GREENSBORO -- Eastern Wayne's Daniel Best finished fourth overall in the triple jump during the season-ending NCHSAA Class 3-A outdoor track and field championship meet Saturday.

Best posted a distance of 44 feet, 5-5 inches.

The Warriors' Amari Brigman took eighth in the discus (106-5) and seventh in the shot put (37-2.25).

C.B. Aycock's top placer was Cyerra Carter, who took sixth in the long jump (16-10).
