Baseball

Rosewood 7, James Kenan 2

* Rosewood pushed across four runs during the first three innings and handed James Kenan a 7-2 loss in second-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs Friday evening.

Kolby Harris retired 10 Tigers on strikeouts and allowed two unearned runs in a 61/3 innings of work on the hill. Boone Moody recorded the final two outs for the save.

Chance Howard paced the Eagles' offense with two hits.

Harris (two RBI), Derek Neal (RBI), Tucker Chapin, Moody (RBI) and Stalen Massengill (RBI) provided one hit apiece.

John Avent led Kenan with two hits and took the pitching loss.

The teams combined for eight errors.

Rosewood (21-4 overall) entertains Pinetown Northside on Tuesday.

Wayne Christian 7,

Statesville Christian 3

* Wayne Christian scratched out six hits and benefited from five errors during its 7-3 triumph over Statesville Christian in quarterfinal-round play of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

Tied at 2-2 through 41/2 innings, the fourth-seeded Eagles seized command with a five-run, fifth-inning uprising.

Holden Foster (RBI), Will White (RBI), Jaxon Anderson (RBI), Jaxon Bauer (RBI) and Ted Kornegay each had one hit. Foster, Ted Suggs and Addison Johnson each had a stolen base.

Foster posted six strikeouts, walked two and yielded two runs (one earned) on five hits during his five-inning pitching stint. Suggs collected the save with two innings of two-hit, three-strikeout relief.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday at top-seeded and unbeaten Lawrence Academy.

West Brunswick 5, C.B. Aycock 1

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock couldn't overcome four defensive errors and endured a season-ending, 5-1 loss to West Brunswick in second-round play of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs Friday evening.

The Trojans led 3-0 after 41/2 innings and tacked on two seventh-inning runs.

Senior Chandler Matthews drove in Aycock's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Matthews ended the night with one hit along with teammates Joey Hampton, Carson Smitherman, Blake Gipson and Bradley Pate.

Hampton and Nolan Harrell each stole one base.

Luke Frederick started and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. He logged four strikeouts. Jordan Gay threw 21/3 innings of two-run, three-strikeout relief.

CBA ended the year 19-7 overall.

Prep girls' soccer

Spring Creek 1,

North Moore 0

* ROBBINS -- Madison Sullivan punched in the game's lone goal as Spring Creek upended North Moore, 1-0, during their second-round matchup in the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs Friday evening.

The Gators entertain Roxboro Community on Tuesday.

Princeton 2,

Pinetown Northside 0

* YEATESVILLE -- Beth Braswell filed 12 strikeouts inside the circle as Princeton dusted Northside, 2-0, in the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs Friday evening.

Braswell surrendered two hits and did not walk a batter during her complete-game performance.

Emily Ricks, Hailey Woodall, Megan Bryant and Braswell provided one hit apiece for the Bulldogs - the reigning state 1-A champions. Woodall and Casey Mitchell each collected an RBI.

Mitchell stole a base.

Princeton continues its postseason road swing Tuesday at second-seeded East Carteret.
