ELON -- No. 1-ranked University of Mount Olive is on the brink of elimination after opening-round play in the Conference Carolinas baseball tournament Thursday evening.
Pfeiffer stunned the top-seeded Trojans, 9-2.
Drew Ellis and David Mayo each drove in a run for UMO, which may lose its No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll.
The sixth-seeded Falcons roughed up Bruce Zimmerman (9-2) for eight runs off seven hits and two walks in 51/3 innings. Zimmerman fanned seven Pfeiffer batters.
UMO faced fifth-seeded Erskine in consolation-round play this morning.
