SOFTBALL: Howell, Taylor lead Cougars past Warriors

Riley Howell stole a career-high five bases and Marcy Taylor threw a complete-game four-hitter as Goldsboro upended county rival Eastern Wayne, 5-3, in the season-opening game for both teams Monday.
Howell ended the day 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Matti Rose Lyon doubled and plated two runs in a 2-for-2 effort. Taylor, Amber Pfennig and Taylor Lane (RBI) each provided one hit.
Inside the circle, Taylor logged six strikeouts, six walks and three earned runs.
Emily Uzzell batted 3-for-4 for the Warriors and endured the mound loss. She yielded five runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks.
Chloe Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rayna Gibson and Amaya McLamb each contributed an RBI.
