Men's tennis

MISENHEIMER -- University of Mount Olive emerged victorious in four of six singles matches and tripped up in-state Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer U, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

Jose Cortijos claimed a three-set decision at No. 2 singles. Martin Moser, Martim Sousa and Jack Middleton each earned a singles point.

Ogulcan Deniz-Moser and Jacob Clarke-Juan Arbelaez each seized a doubles point for the Trojans.

UMO returns home for a weekend conference twinbill against Emmanuel (Ga.) College on Friday and Erskine (S.C.) College on Saturday.

Baseball

CARY -- Trey Pate threw a five-hitter during a five-inning outing as No. 14-ranked University of Mount Olive handed in-state rival St. Augustine's an 11-1 loss at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Pate logged four strikeouts.

Ben Connor paced the Trojans' offense with two home runs, a walk and five RBI in four plate appearances. Connor homered in each of the first and third innings.

Ricky Surum contributed a first-inning RBI triple.

The Trojans (12-4 overall) return home Friday for a weekend series against Conference Carolinas rival Barton.

Women's tennis

MISENHEIMER -- University of Mount Olive swept the doubles courts and cruised past Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer U, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans got wins from the tandems of Stella Di Michelle-Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez, Alejandra Hernandez-Mariana Gamboa and Nicole La Chappelle-Emma Burroughs.

Gonzalez also earned a marathon 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win at No. 2 singles.

Mount Olive returns home Friday for a weekend doubleheader against Emmanuel (Ga.) College and perennial powerhouse Erskine (S.C.) College.

Men's basketball

WILSON -- Barton raced to a 15-point lead just 41/2 minutes into the game and handed University of Mount Olive a season-ending, 84-68 loss in opening-round play of the Conference Carolinas tournament Tuesday evening.

UMO closed to within 29-25 on Saiquan Jamison's layup at the 5:18 mark. The third-seeded Bulldogs answered with a 14-5 run and never relinquished their double-digit advantage from that point.

Sophomore Jamal Matin paced the Trojans with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals. Cameron Robinson and Tyler Thomas chipped in 17 and 10 points, respectively.

The Trojans ended the year 9-20 overall.
