PREP SWIMMING: WCDS' Pittman receives two honors

KINSTON -- Wayne Country Day junior Zan Pittman earned all-Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference accolades and claimed the male swimmer-of-the-year award during Friday's season-ending meet hosted by Christ Covenant School.

The Chargers claimed the boys' team title with a 93-79 decision over Christ Covenant.

Pittman touched the wall first in the 100-yard fly and 100 breaststroke. He swam on two CPIC championship relays -- the 200 medley and 200 free. Joining Pittman were Daniel Covert, Charlie Dees and Raleigh Benson in both events.

Covert emerged as the 200 free champion. Dees and Benson secured conference titles in the 50 free and 100 free, respectively. Dees edged Wayne Christian's Stephen Whitfield by .01 second in the 50.

On the girls' side, WCDS state qualifer Laurel Hinson finished second in the 500 free behind Wayne Christian's Anna Rendall. Rendall completed the grueling 20-lap race in 6 minutes, 31.27 seconds.

Wayne Christian placed second behind Christ Covenant in the team portion of the championship meet.
