Baseball games witness shutouts all the time.

The same is true for hockey, soccer and even football occasionally.

However, on Friday night, the Wayne Country Day girls' team made an argument that basketball should be included on that list.

The Chargers outscored Wayne Christian 18-0 in the second quarter, which carried them to a dominant 69-48 victory over their conference rivals.

"We can play defense," said WCDS head coach David Flowers. "It's just as simple as that. These girls bought into it defensively, and they do it every possession. That's what makes us good."

The Chargers swarmed the Eagles from the opening tip-off. In the first quarter, Wayne Christian turned the ball over 15 times. In the second quarter, there were 12 turnovers.

WCDS led 20-13 after the first quarter, but used a 26-2 run to push the margin to 46-15 midway through the third quarter.

"It was a hard battle for them," said WC head coach Leron Scott. "(WCDS) is a little further along. They've played a few more games than us so they have a little bit of a stronger foundation to work off of. I was pleased with my girls' effort."

In the second half, the Chargers' lead never dipped below 19 points. Jala Holloman paced WCDS with 22 points while adding six assists and six rebounds. Lexi Jeffreys -- who tallied a double-double in the third quarter -- finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

WC's Kasey Norris hit four 3-pointers and led the Eagles with 20 points. Emma Harbuck pumped in 10 points.

Despite the recent blowouts, Flowers said there will be a time when there's a close game.

That's why his focus has always been on improvement -- so when that adversity does come, his Chargers can respond appropriately.

"The biggest goal for these girls is just to continue to get better," Flowers said. "I told the girls, 'We're not going to slack up.' We don't slack up in practice, and we don't slack up in games. We're going to play hard, and we're going to continue to get better."
