• Boys' basketball: Eastern Wayne 47, South Central 44 (OT) -- Devin Brown recorded a triple-double -- 14 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks -- in the Warriors' victory Friday afternoon. Rudy Spears netted 16 points for EW, which rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 60 seconds to force OT. Spears' effort also included four rebounds and four steals. Isaiah Hall contributed nine points, six assists and one steal. The Warriors (17-6 overall) climbed to 3-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play this season.
• Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 52, Christ Covenant 32 -- Jeremy Bentley notched a double-double -- 21 points, 10 rebounds -- during the Eagles' victory. Blake Tinker recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. Dean Thornton supplied six points and 11 rebounds. Addison Johnson and Jayon Wallace had five points apiece.
• Girls' basketball: Southern Wayne 44, New Bern 31 -- Ariana Sutton led the Saints with 14 points. La'Miya Pearsall scored eight points. O'Shaniya Melvin tallied seven points. Alli Gurley and Brianna Purnell each had six points. The Saints (11-4 overall) improved to 4-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play.
• Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 74, Ayden-Grifton 70 -- Altivon Williams collected a team-high 19 points in the Cougars' road win Friday evening. Tyjuwan Barnes scored 16 points, followed by Jyrei Thompson with 15.
• Girls' basketball: Wayne Country Day 43, Greenfield 5 -- Sherica Cox poured in 12 points as the Chargers defeated their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A arch rival on Friday evening. Katie Strickland registered 10 points. Janae Jones and Nicole Zuccarelli posted eight points apiece. One night earlier, Cox emerged as the Chargers' lone double-figure scorer with 14 points in a 34-8 conquest of Parrott Academy, Strickland and Jones each had eight points. WCDS improved to 6-0 overall this season.
• Boys' basketball: Spring Creek 66, Lakewood 41 -- Demartae Bizzell and Tyrese Artis collected 17 points apiece as the Gators prevailed in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Friday afternoon.
Middle schools
• Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 57, Greenfield 21 -- Trent Elliot paced a balanced Chargers offense with 11 points. Cam Gerrard scored 10 points, followed by Jaden Drew with nine. The victory came just 24 hours after WCDS slipped past Parrott Academy, 38-33. Gerrard had 14 points, followed by Tanner Willman with 11 and Dylan Brown with seven. Wayne Country Day is 7-0 overall this season.
