UMO: Poole's 14-kill outing leads Trojans past Belmont Abbey

BELMONT -- Robert Poole cranked out 14 kills and posted two blocks during the University of Mount Olive's 25-17, 25-14, 18-25, 25-17 triumph over Conference Carolinas men's volleyball rival Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening.

Junior Bret Rutledge delivered 13 kills and two blocks. Jeff Yasalonis provided a double-double -- 35 assists and 12 digs.

The Trojans (3-3 overall, 2-0 CC) conclude their season-opening, seven-match road swing Friday at nationally-ranked Penn State. First serve is 7 p.m.

Men's basketball

DUE WEST, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive continued its mid-season climb up the Conference Carolinas ladder with a 61-45 dismantling of Erskine on Tuesday evening.

DeAndre Barber's 3-pointer gave the Trojan men a 15-point halftime lead and the advantage swelled to 18 points early in the second stanza.

Erskine pulled to within 42-31, but UMO answered with Armond Griebe's free throw and a bucket from Jamaal Matin. Matin emerged as the Trojans' top scorer with 16 points.

Junior Tayon Gleaves chipped in 11 points and snared five rebounds.

The Trojans (5-14 overall, 4-7 CC) visit the Palmetto State for a conference doubleheader this weekend. UMO is the guest of Southern Wesleyan on Friday and travels to Limestone on Saturday.

Women's basketball

DUE WEST, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive extended its win streak to six games with a 92-73 conquest of Conference Carolinas rival Erskine on Tuesday evening.

Kiara Jones snagged a career-high 21 rebounds -- the second-highest, single-game total in program history -- and scored 16 points for the Trojan women. Ni'Ya Styles tossed in a game-high 23 points.

Daria Simmons contributed 21 points, followed by Felecity Havens (17 points) and freshman Kennedi Jones (career-high 11 points).

The Trojan women used to a 15-2 run to earn a 23-10 lead with just two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Kiara Jones posted a double-double by halftime as UMO built a double-digit advantage it would never relinquish.

Ranked No. 9 in the latest D2SIDA Southeast Region poll, Mount Olive (14-3 overall, 11-1 CC) travels to Southern Wesleyan on Friday and invades Limestone College on Saturday.
