WEATHER: Preps action returns beginning today

Wayne County Public Schools remained closed Tuesday due to icy roads that melted by mid-afternoon.

The doors are open today.

And that means one thing -- basketball is back.

The "Highway 70 Series" resumes today when long time rivals Kinston and Goldsboro (8-4 overall) meet inside cozy Norvell T. Lee Gym. The JV boys tip off at 5 p.m. and GHS officials are expecting a capacity crowd.

The Cougars and Vikings shared the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference regular-season title last season. Kinston won the ECC tournament, but Goldsboro gained revenge with a second-round victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Down toward Seven Springs, county rivals Rosewood and Spring Creek meet at "The Swamp" for a Carolina 1-A Conference clash. The Gators defeated the Eagles in the seventh-place game of the 2016 Southern Bank/Mount Olive Pickle Winter Classic on Dec. 30.

Each is riding a modest two-game win streak.

Rosewood is 2-10 overall with a 2-2 conference ledger. Spring Creek is 7-5, including a 2-1 league worksheet.

The Princeton at North Duplin triple-header scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Thursday in Calypso. The Carolina 1-A foes start action at 4:30 p.m.

Charles B. Aycock's matchup with Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe J.H. Rose has been rescheduled for Jan. 26. Athletics directors had to work around semester exam dates set by their respective school systems.

No make-up date has been announced for the Eastern Wayne-Southern Wayne basketball quadruple-header.

Rosewood jumps back into the pool today with a 1-A/2-A swim meet at Clinton.

Lees-McRae comes down off the snowy mountain range of North Carolina to play a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at University of Mount Olive. The Trojan women, tied for No. 10 in the NCAA D2SIDA Southeast Regional poll rankings, tip off at 5:30 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.

Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rivals Wayne Country Day and Wayne Christian will each play at home Thursday. WCDS entertains Cape Fear Christian at 6 p.m. WCS welcomes former conference rival Grace Christian of Sanford to Clifford Gym at 5:30 p.m.
