WEATHER: Possible snowstorm causes multiple schedule changes

Wayne County Public Schools officials announced Wednesday afternoon that all athletic competitions and practices scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been canceled.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a winter storm is expected to leave between one and two inches of ice/snow in Wayne County and surrounding areas.

Athletics directors began moving games before the WCPS announcement.

Eastern Wayne, Charles B. Aycock, South Central and Goldsboro all moved their respective conference games to today. The Warriors , Saints and Golden Falcons are on the road, while the Cougars launch their Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference campaign at home against North Lenoir.

Spring Creek athletics director Heath Whitfield said the Gators' Carolina 1-A triple-header with Princeton has been tentatively moved to Jan. 25.

Princeton plays host today to rival Rosewood. The JV boys tip off at 4:30 p.m.

Faith Christian said late Wednesday evening it still planned to hold its scheduled homecoming celebration against N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A foe Wilmington Christian on Friday. Wayne Christian will entertain Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference foe Pope John Paul II Catholic HS.

Southern Wayne athletics director David confirmed after deadline that a wrestling-tri match scheduled for Friday was moved up to today.

The multi-team swim meet at the Goldsboro Family Y was canceled.

CBA's wrestling team will not participate in the two-day Pruitt-Rainey Invitational, which starts Friday at Cleveland High School.

Rivals Rosewood and Princeton were scheduled to battle in the annual Carolina/Two Rivers/Coastal 10 Conference dual-team championships to determine the league's postseason representative. A make-up date has not been announced.

WCPS officials plan to closely monitor the weather and stay in communication with emergency management officials. The N.C. Department of Transportation deployed brine trucks on Wednesday and could switch over to salt, depending on the weather conditions.

University of Mount Olive is scheduled to play host to Limestone (S.C.) College on Friday and Southern Wesleyan on Saturday.

The Trojan women carry a seven-game win streak into their game against LC, while the men look to snap a nine-game skid -- the longest in Joey Higginbotham's career at UMOhead coach.

No changes have been made in the schedule, according to the school's website.
