COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UMO women dump Converse

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive rang in the New Year with an 86-76 triumph over Conference Carolinas foe Converse (S.C.) College on Tuesday evening.
Daria Simmons posted her first-ever collegiate double-double -- 28 points, 10 rebounds. She added five assists and six steals for the Trojan women, who extended their win streak to seven.
Junior Felecity Havens added a double-double -- 20 points, 13 rebounds. Ni'Ya Styles contributed 11 points.
Mount Olive (8-2 overall, 5-0 CC) closed out the opening quarter with a 14-0 run and held a comfortable 40-17 margin with four minutes remaining before halftime.
Converse climbed to within 82-74 with 21 seconds left in the game. The Trojan women scored four of the contest's final six points.
UMO continues a five-game home swing with a weekend doubleheader against Limestone on Friday and Southern Wesleyan on Saturday. Each game tips off at 5:30 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
