* FAYETTEVILLE -- Tim Decatur earned an individual title and Rosewood returned home with the team championship trophy after winning the Mike Stanbridge Colt Stampede wrestling tournament contested at Cape Fear High School.

The Eagles edged the host Colts, 165-163, in the team portion of the day-long individual tournament. Purnell Swett claimed third with 151 points, followed by Terry Sanford (130.5 points) and Gray's Creek (122).

"The Colt Stampede was a great experience for us," RHS head coach Bill Edmundson said. "Our wrestlers learned a very important lesson here when it comes to team competition. Each wrestler contributed to the win.

"(We) were the only school that finished in the top 10 that wasn't (a) 4-A (school)."

Decatur placed first at 113 pounds.

Boys' basketball

Northwood Temple 99,

Wayne Country Day 74

* BURLINGTON -- Jimmie Sanders earned all-tournament accolades and Wayne Country Day fell 99-74 to Northwood Temple in the Spartan Classic on Saturday.

Sanders posted a double-double -- 14 points, 10 assists. Teammate Jamal King contributed a double-double (team-high 23 points, team-high 11 rebounds). Cole Atwood knocked down 20 points.

Marcus Metcalf tallied 12 points.

"We came out much better and with a lot more energy, unfortunately it wore off after halftime," WCDS head coach David Flowers said. "Our guys played better and the offense seemed to flow a little bit better, also."

Foul trouble plagued the Chargers, who had two players to foul out.

NTA buried 12 three-pointers.

WCDS opened the Classic with an 87-39 loss to the Burlington School. Sanders scored 16 points and dished out eight assists. King pulled down eight rebounds.

"This one was ugly," Flowers said. "(We) just couldn't seem to get things going offensively. They jumped on us early and never let up. We needed plays and just couldn't get it."

Girls' basketball

Wayne Country Day 61,

High Point Christian 21

* BURLINGTON -- Jala Holloman nabbed a spot on the all-tournament team and helped lead Wayne Country Day past High Point Christian, 61-21, in the third-place game of the Spartan Classic.

Holloman provided 16 points, six steals and six assists.

Lexi Jeffreys logged a double-double -- 24 points, 11 rebounds. Beverly Tabe snagged six rebounds.

"(A) much better game than Friday," first-year Chargers head coach David Flowers said. "It was very good to see the girls respond in such a good way. We applied the pressure to High Point, which caused them to make turnovers and we did a much better job of taking care of the ball and attacking the defense."

WCDS dropped a 75-30 decision to the Burlington School on Friday.

Holloman collected 10 points and five steals. Jeffreys provided six points and eight rebounds. Tabe pulled down eight boards.

The Chargers (2-2 overall) entertain Northwood Temple today.
