AWARDS: Wayne Country Day athletes honored after fall season ends

Wayne Country Day athletes concluded their fall sports campaign with a season-ending awards ceremony held in the gymnasium.

Two teams were recognized for winning state championships this past weekend -- girls' cross country and girls' tennis. The tennis squad won its fourth consecutive N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team championship.

The cross country squad, directed by head coach Robert Glass, became the seventh different team in WCDS athletics history to win a state title.

Michael Taylor, athletics director, recognized three Coastal Plains Independent Conference players-of-the-year -- Cole Atwood (boys' cross country), Janae Jones (girls' cross country) and senior Noah Adkins (boys' soccer).

The award winners were:

* Varsity boys' soccer: Team player -- Adkins. All-CPIC -- Adkins, Nehemiya Shaw, Ben Cohen, Hunter Bryson and Jack Talton. NCISAA All-State -- Adkins, Cohen Shaw.

* JV boys' soccer: Team player -- Frank Best; Most Improved -- Nick Covert.

* Varsity volleyball: Coach's Award -- Olivia Dively; Most Improved -- Lillian Freeman and Kyara Drew; Most Valuable Player -- DeKiya Wilson-Thomas. All-CPIC -- Wilson-Thomas, Dively, Hannah Neal. All-CPIC honorable mention -- Freeman

* JV girls' volleyball: Coach's Award -- Mary Allison Watkins; Most Improved --Liz Johnson; MVP -- Cate Eagles.

* JV girls' tennis: Coach's Award -- Grace O'Daniel.

* Varsity girls' tennis: Coach's Award -- Ally Willman; Most Improved -- Langley Barnes; MVP -- Jennifer Potts. NCISAA All-State -- Potts, Willman, Eliza Eagles.

* Boys' cross country: Coach's Award -- Connor Bauer; Best Time -- Atwood; All-CPIC -- Atwood, Bauer, Patel. NCISAA All-State -- Atwood.

* Girls' cross country: Coach's Award -- Gray Young and Elizabeth Bailey; Best Time -- Jones; All-CPIC -- Jones, Young, Ashton Gupton, Katherine Eltz, Sophie De Arujo. NCISAA All-State -- Jones, Young, De Arujo, Gupton.
