PIKEVILLE -- Every time Sean Doulin sprinted toward Asheboro's goal Saturday night, Charles B. Aycock head coach Corey Worrell could be heard screaming, "Go, Sean! Go!"

For over 100 minutes, the pleas were in vain. But Worrell didn't give up shouting, and Doulin didn't give up running.

In the 108th minute, Doulin rifled a shot past Asheboro goalkeeper Wesley Williams. The ball slipped past Williams' hands, and sealed a 3-2 Golden Falcons' victory in sudden-death overtime.

The goal also punched CBA's ticket to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. The fourth-seeded Golden Falcons will play fifth-seeded Terry Sanford on Tuesday.

"Coe (Jordan) had a brilliant touch," Doulin said. "He just fed it to me, and I just put it away."

The golden goal capped a furious comeback by the Golden Falcons.

After a 0-0 tie in the first 40 minutes, Asheboro drew first blood with a goal by Jose Ortiz in the 42nd minute.

The Blue Comets continued to pressure CBA's defense, which led to a fast break opportunity in the 48th minute. Asheboro's Jovan Cotton sprinted past multiple defenders, and gave Asheboro a 2-0 lead.

That proved to be the last goal for the Blue Comets.

In the 63rd minute, an Oscar Carcamo free kick found the foot of Zach Zacharzuk -- 2-1, Asheboro.

Just seven minutes later, the Golden Falcons drew a penalty kick. David McIver stepped up to the ball, and easily slammed the ball past the goalkeeper.

Tie game.

"I just think the boys stuck together, and we still played our game," Worrell said. "We kept possession, we passed the ball. I always tell the boys we're not worried about the opponent. We're worried about our game and the way we play our game."

CBA and Asheboro proceeded to battle through 10 more minutes of regulation, two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden-death OT periods.

The match was three minutes away from a penalty-kick shootout when Doulin scored the game-winning goal.

"Six a.m. workouts at the beginning of the year," said Doulin in reference to the comeback. "Our coach just pounded us in it. He just said, 'Keep working! Keep working!'"

Both teams had over 15 shots. Asheboro drew four corner kicks while CBA tallied three corners.

Saturday marked the third time in four games that CBA played a match decided by one goal. The Golden Falcons have won all three contests.

With a game just three days away, Worrell said he will do everything he can to prevent his team from being mentally or emotionally drained.

"There won't be any days off," Worrell said. "Keep them stretching, keep them hydrated and make sure they get plenty of food in them for the next two or three days. Just keep on plugging like we've been."
