FOOTBALL: Cougars give Rams fits in ECC 2A

Dayquell Dawson tossed a pair of touchdown passes in Goldsboro's 28-20 loss to Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference rival Greene Central at Cougar Stadium on Friday evening.

Dawson connected with KJ Alston on a 38-yard score in the third quarter. He hooked up with Ronnie Tookes from 13 yards out in the final period.

The senior signal caller ended the night with 11 completions to four different receivers for 109 yards. Alston had four catches, followed by Tookes with three, Jacob Owens with two and Andrew McNeil with two.

Bowden paced the Cougars' ground attack with 105 yards, including a short 3-yard touchdown burst in the opening quarter. Dennis Coley added 48 yards, followed by Tilwan James with 14.

Goldsboro amassed 262 yards of total offense.

Emmanuel Persky emerged as the defensive leader with 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops. Trevor Taylor and Rodney Dodson provided eight tackles apiece. Bowden had five stops.

A total of 15 Cougars recorded at least one solo tackle or one assist on the night. Goldsboro finished with 63 tackles and two hits behind the line of scrimmage as a team.

The Cougars (0-10 overall, 0-4 ECC) conclude regular-season play next Thursday at South Lenoir.
